For Immediate Release – Prince Albert, SK – (June 6, 2011) –
The Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s (MJT) Saskatchewan Series continued with a weekend event at Cooke Municipal Golf Club in Prince Albert on June 4-5, where the Boston Pizza-presented “Road to College Golf” program saw promising play by girls and boys from across the prairies.

Liam Courtney, 16, of Saskatoon, SK, was the overall low finisher for the event after following up his opening round of 76 with a blistering 69 second day score, and his 145 total was good for a six stroke victory in the Boys 14-16 year old division. “I putted really well coming in and my highlights were the two eagles I made on par fours,” he said. “It feels great to win the tournament after all the hard work I have put in.” Daegan Wall, 16, of Regina, SK, took the silver medal in the division after carding 76-75 (151), while Prince Albert’s Zach Hurd, 14, earned the bronze with his scores of 78-76 (154).

Consistent play of Jerry Christiansen, 18, of Saskatoon, earned him the Boy’s 17-19 year old division gold medal after he fired back-to-back rounds of 74 for a 148 total. Christiansen is also the eligible qualifier for a shortlisted spot on MJT Team Canada to the Srixon International Junior Classic in NSW, Australia, in October. The division’s silver medal went to Jehremy Ryde, 18, of Eston, SK, who shot 81-74 (155) and another local Prince Albert player, Justin Paradis, 17, scored the bronze medal (81-78=159).

In the Boy’s 13 and under division, Cory Sawchuck, 13, of Prince Albert, used local knowledge to his advantage and ran away with the gold medal with superb scores of 74-73 (147). “My tournament highlight was back-to-back birdies on 17 and 18 on day two,” Sawchuk said. “It feels great to win my division – I really enjoyed the prizes and thought I played great.” Matthew Douglas, also 13, of Regina, SK, was the runner-up finishing his tournament with scores of 94-89 for a 183 total, while only one shot back of Douglas was Dhrake Berezowski, 12, of Prince Albert, who took the bronze medal with his two rounds of 95-89.

The girls division was a contest between Jamieson Smeaton, 18 of Lethbridge, AB, and Kayla Sawchuck, 12, of Prince Albert, with close play due to Sawchuck opening with an 88 to Smeaton’s 89. Round two belonged to Smeaton who shot an 84 to Sawchuck’s 94 and took the division title. Smeaton’s 173 total gives her a shortlisted spot for girls on MJT Team Canada to Australia.

Divisional winners in the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition were Cory Sawchuk, Riley Grona of Coronach, Jehremy Ryde and Kayla Sawchuk, while the Sundog Eyewear Skills Competition winners were Justin Bourassa of Regina, Zach Hurd, Jerry Christiansen and Kayla Sawchuk. The Golf Town Comeback Awards went to Bourassa, Jessy-Lee Lacher of Swift Current, Ryde and Smeaton.

Next stop on the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour Saskatchewan schedule is the MJT Prodigy Series at Chinook Golf Club and Elmwood Golf Club in Swift Current on July 2-3, a qualifier for the Texas Junior Golf Tour’s Holiday Classic.
