FINE FINALE TO MJT SEASON AT WHISTLE BEAR

CAMBRIDGE, ON - (October 18, 2010) –
The Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT) successfully concluded the Ontario One Day Fall Series on Saturday October 16th at Whistle Bear Golf Club in Cambridge, where a full field of competitive junior golfers enjoyed perfect weather with mild temperatures and sunshine.

14-year-old Matt LeMay of Waterloo faced down the fast greens with panache and continued his winning streak with a fabulous two-under-par round of 70, claiming his third MJT Boys 14-16 title this season as well as the low overall score. “My 40 foot putt on number seven for birdie was a highlight,” he summed up. “I play MJT because of the great competition and well run events, and it feels great to get another win in 2010.” There was a tie for second place in the division between Kody Fry, 16, of Grand Valley, and John Boncoddo, 14, of Brantford, after both players carded an even par 72.

Brett Kennedy, 18, of Kitchener, commented that Andrew Moffat’s eagle on the fourth hole had him worried for a while, however he went on to fire 74 and won the Boys 17-19 title, edging Moffat, 17, of Brantford, by one. “Making my putt on the 18th green was a highlight,” said Kennedy. Third place in the division went to Karim Corringham, 19, of Pickering, who scored 76.

A playoff was needed to decide the winner of the Boys 13 and under division after two 13-year-old Waterloo residents, Tyler Douse and Connor Doucette, both shot 79 and tied for the lead. Douse, who won on the second playoff hole with a birdie, said of the tournament, “Connor had me worried because I knew he was ahead by six strokes after the first nine holes. I didn’t believe I had much of a chance of winning. I feel relieved because this is my first tournament win!” Mark Wodz, 12, of Toronto, took third place with a score of 82.

The Girls division was decisively won by MJT veteran Kirsten Degutis, 17, who shot 83 to take home her sixth title of the year. “I am very happy to win at my home course,” she said, and cited her birdie on the ninth hole as a highlight. There was a tightly contested race for second place with three players ending up all tied at 90 – Monica Gabriele, 14, of Mississauga, Maddy Piccininni, 16, of Toronto, and Dylaney Day, 11, also of Toronto.

The Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition prizes in each division were won by Mark Wodz, Kody Fry, Colin McCoy, 17, of Tilsonburg, and Maddy Piccininni, while Sundog Closest-to-the-Pin competition winners were Kyle MacDonald, 12, of Oakville, G.J. Kuhn, 15, of Ayr, Karim Corringham and Monica Gabriele. Golf Town Comeback Awards were presented to Tyler Douse, Dylaney Day, and Jordan Hutchings, 15, of Woodslee, who also added a fantastic Callaway Diablo Driver to his takings as a draw prize.

A number of the juniors in the province are now looking forward to the MJT’s invitation-only Boston Pizza National Championship presented by Callaway at Wigwam Golf Resort and Spa in Phoenix, AZ, November 20-21, where 60 players from across Canada will compete for national division titles.
