HAMARA WINS MJT LOW OVERALL AT CAMBRIDGE; TAI TAKES PLAYOFF

Cambridge, ON - (October 11, 2010) –
Beautiful 20 degree weather with not a cloud in the sky greeted junior golfers in the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s penultimate stop at Cambridge Golf Club in Cambridge, ON, in the MJT Ontario One Day Fall Series on Saturday, October 9th. The golf course presented a decent challenge to the players, with an even par 72 from Dylan Hamara winning low overall and the Boys 17-19 title.

Hamara, 17, of Cambridge, cited his eagle on the par five 16th hole as a highlight, and consistency as reason for his win. “It feels great to have a multiple win season,” he said, as he was MJT 17-19 champion at Ambassador Golf Club in Windsor earlier this year. “I will be trying to keep my short game sharp in the off-season now.” Eight strokes back in second place in the division was Won Joon Choi of North York (80). There was a tie for third at 81 between Jun Ho Choi, 19, of Vaughan, and A. J. Flanagan, 18, of St. George.

About 40 spectators watched a playoff in the 14-16 division between MJT veteran, Truman Tai, 16, of Markham, and newcomer Taewon Kim, 15, of Richmond Hill, after both had tied for the lead with scores of 73. Tai defeated Kim and claimed his putting as the key. “My 20 foot birdie putt on my last hole and then the 30 foot birdie putt I made in the playoff were definitely the reason I won today,” he stated. “It feels great to come from behind and end the year on a high note.” Third place among Boys 14-16 went to Matt LeMay, 14, of Waterloo, who shot 76.

Craig Stefureak, 13, of Caledonia, added his 7th win to his record run in the Boys 13 and under division after firing a round of 77. “I had a good front nine - making my birdie putt from off the green on the third hole was the highlight,” he said. “I feel great about winning my last tournament before heading to Arizona (for the MJT National Championship).” Connor Doucette, 13, of Waterloo, carded a fine 80 to finish second, and Justin Plane, 13, of Whitby, rounded out the top three places with his score of 84.

The Girls division title went to Grace Chung, 16, of Richmond Hill, after she fired 81 to edge Monica Gabriele, 14, of Mississauga, by one. Chung considered hitting greens in regulation as reason for her victory. “I did not have my ‘A game’ today but I am happy that I still had enough to win,” she said. “I plan on working on getting stronger and in better physical shape this off-season.” Maddy Piccininni, 16, of Toronto, placed third after carding 89.

The divisional winners in the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition were Tyler Douse of Waterloo, Matt Gerber of Kitchener, Tyler Schwartz of Calgary, Alberta, and Grace Chung, while Sundog Closest-to-the-Pin divisional awards went to Parker Lobban of St. Clements, Keaton Jones of Kitchener, Won Joon Choi and Kimberly Risulmi of Milton. Golf Town Comeback Awards in each division were earned by Colton Dorion of Cambridge, Brian Hyung of Toronto, Jun Ho Choi and Maddy Piccininni.

The final stop on the MJT’s Ontario One Day Fall Series runs October 16th at Whistle Bear Golf Club in Canmbridge. For more information or to register, please visit www.maplejt.com or call 1-877-859-4653.
