DIAZ GEARS UP FOR AUSTRALIA AT GUELPH LAKES

Guelph, ON - (September 20, 2010) –
The first stop on the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s (MJT) five-event Ontario One Day Fall Series played out in overcast weather on Saturday, September 18th at Guelph Lakes Golf Course in Guelph, where Javier Diaz warmed up for his showing in the Srixon International Junior Classic in Australia this October by winning low overall score for the entire field.

Diaz, 18, of Vaughan, who is en route with 10 other players on MJT Team Canada to compete down under next month after qualifying at a previous MJT tournament, laid claim to the Boys 17-19 division title with his score of 73. “I play the MJT because it is a fun tour that is well organized,” he said. “It feels great (to win). My highlight was how I drove the ball today along with how my putting stood up during the entire round.” Newcomer Jordan Gregoris, 17, of Aurora, was runner-up in the division in his first MJT outing after carding 80, edging out fellow Aurora resident Jamie Cherutti, 17, who finished third (81).

Matt LeMay, 14, of Waterloo, cited his shot to within four feet of the pin from 100 yards on the 16th hole as his tournament highlight, and won the Boys 14-16 title after firing 75. “I feel good about winning today because I haven’t played in a tournament for a while and it feels great to compete once again,” he said. “I focused on scoring and just doing my best instead of thinking about my competitors. I play MJT because it is always fun, the pace of play is great, plus the prizes are really good!” Runner-up to LeMay was Joel Albany, 14, of Georgetown, who edged a pack of competitors with his round of 80 in the tightly contested division. Colton Clemmer, 16, of Kitchener, Jonathon Collins, 15, of Fergus, and Truman Tai, 16, of Markham, all tied for third one stroke back.

A playoff was needed in the Boys 13 and under division between Connor Doucette, 13, of Waterloo, and Scott Herod, 12, of Cambridge, after both players tied for the lead at 83, with Doucette winning on the second playoff hole. “That was my highlight,” he said. “It is awesome (to win), there are no real words to describe it.” Newcomer Jack Quirke, 13, of Waterloo, placed third in his first MJT outing after carding 84. Herod cleaned up in the other prize categories, however, winning the division’s Mr. Lube Long Drive, Sundog Closest-to-the-Pin and Golf Town Comeback Awards.

Another MJT newcomer won the Girls division title, after Annika Haynes, 13, of Oakville, shot 81 to beat runner-up Monica Gabriele, 14, of Mississauga, by four strokes. “A friend of mine recommended that I try this tour,” said Haynes. “I feel great (about winning) because this is my first win and I played really well in a tournament.” Third place went to Meghan Bennett, 15, of Pickering, who carded 86.

The other divisional winners in the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition were Jonathon Colllins, Joshua Richard-Monro, of Oakville, and Kirsten Degutis, of Waterloo. Sundog Closest-to-the-Pin divisional winners also included Joel Albany, Matthew Miller of Aurora, and Annika Haynes, and Golf Town Comeback Awards went to Albany, Miller and Meghan Bennett. There were also many draw prize winners in the tournament.

The next stop on the MJT’s Ontario One Day Fall Series is September 25th at Tarandowah Golf Club in Avon. For more information or to register, please visit www.maplejt.com or call 1-877-859-4653.
