JONES TOPS MJT LEADERBOARD AT TIMBER RIDGE

Brighton, ON – (August 16, 2010) – Timber Ridge Golf Club in Brighton played host to the Boston Pizza-presented Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT) over the August 14th and 15th weekend, where Keaton Jones, 15, of Kitchener and Whistle Bear Golf Club, topped the leaderboard and qualified for a paid entry into a Future Collegiate World Tour (FCWT) event of his choice in the USA.

Jones, who cited numerous clutch putts and seeing his name on the top of the leaderboard as his tournament highlights, fired 76-73 to win his first MJT title by five strokes, beating Brett Geiser, 16, of Markham and Sleep Hollow Golf Club, and Tommi Peters, 15, of Peterborough and Kawartha Golf Club. Both players had tied for second place in the Boys 14-16 division at 154 total score after Geiser had shot a brilliant closing round of 67 to vault up the leaderboard (87-67), earning the Golf Town Comeback Award for his improvement over day one. MJT newcomer, Peters, was close for the award after carding 81-73. Mitchell Ahrens, of Peterborough, won the 14-16 division’s Sundog Closest-to-the-Pin (KP) competition.

Another first-time winner was Brett Kennedy, 18, of Kitchener, who laid claim to three prizes among Boys 17-19 after edging Nate Cross, 17, of London, for the title, then adding the division’s Sundog Closest-to-the-Pin (KP) competition and Golf Town Comeback award to his portfolio. Kennedy shot 79-74 and credited his short game for the victory. Cross fell short by one after carding 79-75. Third place, as well as the Mr. Lube Long Drive prize, went to Dylan Hamara, 17, of Cambridge (79-83).

Burlington’s Joey Hetherman, 13, won his second Boys 13 and under title on Sunday after posting back-to-back rounds of 77 to finish five strokes ahead of MJT newcomer, Ryan Ahrens, 12, of Peterborough and Kawartha Golf Club. Hetherman, a junior at Rattlesnake Golf Club, cited holing it from the fairway on two as his tournament highlight, and aimed to ‘just play my game and I’ll do just fine’ coming down the stretch. Whistle Bear juniors Connor Doucette, 13, of Waterloo (83-78), and Max Clift, 12, of Kitchener (82-79), tied for third place at 161 total score, and Clift claimed the division’s KP competition. The Long Drive prize went to Kyle Gorospe, 12, of Mississauga, and the Comeback Award to Scott Herod, 12, of Cambridge, who had a nine stroke improvement in scores from day one to day two.

Another Whistle Bear junior, Kirsten Degutis, 16, of Waterloo, continued her winning ways on the MJT and shot 88-83 to win her third Girls division title. Degutis, who also won the Long Drive competition, said she was thinking, ‘Oh no, everyone is watching,’ coming down the stretch, but played smart to secure the win. Alisha Corringham, 15, of Pickering and Whitevale Golf Club, carded her two best rounds on the MJT to date to place second (91-92), and also scooped the division’s KP competition. 11-year-old Dylaney Day, of Toronto and Toronto Ladies Club, shot 97-89 to come third and took the Comeback Award.

The MJT wraps up its multi-day tournament schedule in the province this season with a three-day event on August 21st, 22nd and 23rd at Osprey Valley Golf Club in Alton, before heading into the Fall One Day Series.
