EMERY LOW OVERALL ON MJT AT CALEDON; RICHARD-MONRO TAKES FCWT SPOT

Caledon, ON – (August 9, 2010) –
The Boston Pizza-presented Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT), Canada’s only national junior tour run exclusively by Canadian PGA Professionals, visited Caledon Golf Club in Caledon for the very first time in its 12 year history on the August 7th and 8th weekend, where Sterling Emery took low overall honours and Joshua Richard-Monro was the eligible qualifier for a paid entry into a Future Collegiate World Tour (FCWT) event of his choice in the USA.

Emery, 19, of Orangeville, closed with a final round of 72 in the Boys 17-19 division to beat runner-up Richard-Monro, 17, of Oakville, by five shots with his 150 total score, and stated, “Making an eagle on six was a highlight. I just stayed focused and did not worry about my competitors. Coming down the stretch I just thought to keep the ball in play.” Richard-Monro carded 78-77 for second low score overall, claiming the spot for boys aged between 14 and 18 to a FCWT event. Third place went to Nate Cross, 17, of London (85-82), who also cleaned up the Boys 17-19 division’s Mr. Lube Long Drive and Sundog Closest-to-the-Pin Competitions.

Brett Geiser, 16, of Markham, stayed in the 70’s to shoot his best scores to date this season of 79-78, winning his first MJT Boys 14-16 division title by four strokes over fellow Markham resident, Truman Tai (84-77). Geiser cited his straight drives as key to his win; “They allowed me to set up for my irons. I found some long game – my irons were going longer than usual. I was only three up on the last three holes so it was getting close.” There was a tie for third place at 166 total score between Andrew Moffat, 16, of Brantford (89-77), and Joel Albany, 14, of Georgetown (86-80). Geiser won the Long Drive, Moffat the Comeback Award, and Michael Richards, 15, of Cobourg, won the Closest-to-the-Pin.

Craig Stefureak, 13, of Caledonia, cited sinking a birdie putt on the first hole as a highlight as he won his fourth MJT Boys 13 and under title in style after firing 75-80 on the Caledon course. “My chipping was the reason for my win,” he added, as he focused on ‘playing his game’ down the stretch. Connor Doucette, 13, of Waterloo, closed with a 78 to shoot 163 and move into second place, edging Joey Hetherman, 13, of Burlington (81-83 =164). The division’s Mr. Lube Long Drive and Golf Town Comeback Awards were both won by Bryce Hardie, 13, of Brampton. The Sundog Closest-to-the-Pin Competition winner was Alex Stec, 13, of Keswick.

Kirsten Degutis, 16, of Waterloo, shot 81-79 and beat Monica Gabriele, 14, of Mississauga (91-95), to win the Girls division title, after concentrating on breaking 80 coming down the stretch. “Being even on the front nine was my highlight,” she said, also walking away with the Long Drive and Golf Town Comeback Awards. Gabriele won the Closest-to-the-Pin.
