JURKIEWICZ WINS LOW OVERALL AND MJT’S TEXAN SPOT AT GREY SILO

Waterloo, ON – (July 26, 2010) – Players on the Boston Pizza-presented Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT) battled the links that wind around the Grand River at Grey Silo Golf Club in Waterloo this past weekend, vying for division titles and an paid entry into the Texas Junior Golf Tour’s Barton Creek Holiday Classic this December.

Players endured some wet conditions during round one on Saturday as it rained off and on for most of the day, however Sunday saw beautiful weather which led to some good scoring opportunities.

Brian Jurkiewicz, 17, who hails all the way from Hamburg, New York State, fired 74-73 (147) to edge defending champion, Sterling Emery, 19, of Orangeville (75-73=148) for the Boys 17-19 title and low overall honours, securing the paid entry to the Texan event along the way. “Chipping in on number 13 for birdie was my tournament highlight,” said Jurkiewicz, who is enjoying a solid fourth season on the MJT. “It is something that I will never forget and it was the highlight of my year (to win).” Brett Kennedy, 17, of Kitchener, shot 74-76 (150) to finish in the top three for the third time this season.

In the Boys 14-16 division, three players tied for the lead at 149 total score and went into a play-off for the first place medal. Colin Abbot, 16, of Port Stanley (79-70) won on the first hole with a par, edging his challengers J.P. Reitzel, 15, of Conestogo (77-72) and Andrew Moffat, 16, of Brantford (76-73), who is due for a victory as he also lost in a playoff in the same event last year. Abbot, who takes his second MJT title in as many starts, explained the reason for his lead in the division as having “a really good finish the second round.” His tournament highlight was “tapping in my par putt in the playoff to win. It feels really good. I’m happy to win my second MJT in a row.”

Madison Easterbrook, 14, of Burlington, continued her strong season on the MJT with her best total score to date of 78-79=157, capturing her well-deserved third Girls division title. “Getting a birdie on hole 17 was a highlight,” she said. “I played smart and stayed calm after bad shots. I feel happy and proud (to win).” Runner-up was Emily Fitzgerald, 19, of Kitchener, who carded the lowest closing round for the girls of 78 to finish at 166 total score. Third spot was taken by last year’s champion, Kirsten Degutis, 16, of Waterloo, who scored 84-89 (173).

Boys 13 and under division champion, Trevor Ranton, 13, of Waterloo, fired 81-80 (161) and cited his “short game and mindset” as key to his first MJT title. “Making a 60-footer for birdie on nine was a highlight; I feel relieved that I got my first tournament win.” Runner-up Max Clift, 12, of Kitchener, carded solid rounds of 83-80 (163), while third place went to Kyle Gorospe, 12, of Mississauga (83-82=165).

The divisional winners in the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition were Bryce Hardie of Brampton, Kody Fry of Grand Valley, Dylan Smallwood of Cambridge, and Madison Easterbrook. The Sundog Skills competition divisional winners were Kyle Gorospe, Joel Albany of Georgetown, Tim Ropchan of Bellville, and Emily Fitzgerald. Golf Town Comeback Awards were presented to Tyler Douse of Waterloo, Matt O’Reilly of Waterloo, Maddy Piccininni of Toronto and Alex Rajna of Waterloo.
