MILLER MAKES THE MOST OF MJT’S MACLEOD SAVINGS & CREDIT UNION CLASSIC

Nanton, AB – (August 24, 2010) –
The Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT) held its final Alberta multi-stop, the two-day MJT Macleod Savings and Credit Union Classic, at the Nanton Golf Club in Nanton on August 23rd and 24th,, where Travis Miller, 16, of Calgary, claimed Low Overall and the 14-16 Division title by three shots over his closest rival, winning the Gold Medal and first place prizing of a Cleveland Wedge, $50 Boston Pizza gift card, and a paid entry into a Future Collegiate World Tour (FCWT) event of his choice in the U.S.A.

In blustery conditions during the closing round, Miller’s rounds of 69-72 kept all rivals at bay as he “played very solid today – I am very happy with my performance. I hit a lot of good solid shots over the last couple days.” Finishing in second place in the Boys 14-16 was Brett Hogan, 16, of Calgary, who shot consistent rounds of 72-72 to win the Silver Medal and an Odyssey White Ice putter. Finishing in third place was Nick Scrymgeour, 15, of Cochrane, who continued to play very well as he has all year, claiming the Bronze Medal and prizing of a Canterbury Golf belt and a Firstar shirt for his rounds of 72-73.

As the wind picked up on the second day, so did the scores in the Boys 17-19 at the Macleod Savings and Credit union-sponsored event, where first round leader Corbin Adams of Edmonton fired 68-80 to barely hold on to the Division Title, just edging out Eric Praught, 17, of Canmore. Praught carded 79-71 and had the low round of the day to move into second place. Adams had a tough start, but he kept his composure on the back nine. “I knew that everyone was close after how I played on the front nine, so I just tried to hit solid shots, make some pars and make the field beat me with birdies. This is my last junior event, and my first win on the MJT, so this feels excellent!” he said. Finishing in third place was Jordan Gibson, 18, of Picture Butte, who carded 72-79.

In the Girls Division, Becky Martin, 17, of Medicine Hat, played flawlessly on day two, shooting 76-73 to claim her third MJT title of the year. Martin just “seemed to par everything, not many bogeys and not many birdies. Lots of greens in regulation helped me to this win, and I just tried to keep going and play solidly for the entire final day.” Finishing in second place with two very solid rounds was Mieke Heyns, 17, of Lethbridge, who carded rounds of 79-76 and finished one ahead of Sydney MacDonald, 16, of Calgary (77-79).

In the Boys 13 & Under, Jason Martens, 13, of Edmonton won his fifth tournament of the year on the MJT, firing rounds of 75-77 to claim the Gold Medal again. Martens stated, “I drove the ball very well. I had a lot of wedges into the greens, and tried to finish strong. It is very difficult to finish here, but I just tried to keep it in play and make some pars coming in. This win caps off a great year for me!” In second place was newcomer Ethan Leier, 13, of Calgary, who carded 84-75, while Andrew Brown, 13, also of Calgary, finished alone in third place with rounds of 84-82.

The divisional winners in the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition included Jason Martens, Brandon Fong, 15, of Calgary, Craig Ryan, 18, of St. Albert, and Becky Martin. The Sundog Skills competition divisional winners were Martens, Drew Barvir, 16, of Dewinton, Joel Hasselman, 17, of Pincher Creek, and Sydney MacDonald. The Golf Town Comeback Awards went to Trent Ducharme, 13, of Fort McLeod, Jamieson Smeaton, 17, of Lethbridge, Danny Degenstein, 14, of Lethbridge, and Eric Praught.
