NAGINDAS ENDS MJT SEASON ON HIGH NOTE AT WHISTLE BEAR

Cambridge, ON - (October 26, 2009) – The season-ending tournament on the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT), Canada’s only national junior tour run exclusively by Golf Professionals, played out on Saturday October 24 at Whistle Bear Golf Club in Cambridge. The one day event featured the biggest number of junior golfers in each age group for the season, who were competing for division titles in poor weather which was described by MJT Tournament Director, Dave Smallwood, CPGA, as ‘some of the worst weather’ he’s seen for golf. “Heavy winds, rain on and off, cold. The kids played very well under those conditions.”

Shyamal Nagindas, 16, of Aurora, fired an excellent round of 76 in the wind and rain to win the Boys 14-16 division as well as low overall score for the field. Two strokes back in the division was runner-up Oliver Stephens, 14, of Sarnia, while Truman Tai, 15, of Markham, posted a fine 37 on the front nine but 42 on the back to settle for third place with 79.

A score of 79 won Jason Watchorn, 17, of Waterloo, his first Boys 17-19 title after a solid season on the MJT. MJT Team Canada member Sterling Emery, 18, of Orangeville, fresh off participation in the Srixon International Junior Classic in Cessnock, Australia, placed second in the division with a score of 81. There was a tie for third place at 83 between Luke Kremer, 17, of North York, and Brett Kennedy, 17, of Kitchener.

The Girls division was also won with a score of 79, shot by Emily Fitzgerald, 18, of Kitchener, who claims dominance in the MJT One Day Series with three wins in as many events and is en route to the States on a golf scholarship. 13-year-old Monica Gabriele of Mississauga and 16-year-old Kirsten Degutis of Waterloo came second and third with scores of 92 and 98 respectively.

Brendan Seys, 11, of Port Lambton, started and ended the MJT season with victories in the Boys 13 and under division. He won the MJT season-opener at Mystic Golf Club in Ancaster back in May, and shot 82 to win at Whistle Bear Golf Club, the final MJT stop. Four strokes back in second place was MJT newcomer Jack Quirke, 12, of Waterloo, who posted a fine score of 86 in his first MJT outing. There was a tie for third at 87 between Nick Petryna, 12, all the way from Sudbury, and John Boncoddo, 13, of Brantford, also playing his first MJT tournament this season.

The divisional winners in the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition were Max Clift, 11, of Kitchener, Joshua Hall, 16, of Vineland, Cameron Garon, 17, of Dundas, and Monica Gabriele. The Sundog Skills competition divisional winners were Connor Doucette, 12, of Waterloo, Dylan Hamara, 16, of Cambridge, Brett Kennedy and Maddy Piccininni, 15, of Toronto. There were also many draw prize winners in the tournament.

A number of juniors in the province are now looking forward to the MJT’s invitation-only National Tour Championship at Wigwam Golf Resort and Spa in Phoenix, AZ, November 21-22, where 72 players from across Canada will compete for national division titles.
