TAI TOPS AT MJT’S CAMBRIDGE STOP

Cambridge, ON - (August 31, 2009) – Truman Tai, 15, of Markham, shot a two-under-par 70 to win low overall and the Boys 14-16 division title at the first stop on the five-event Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT) One Day Series, which was held at Cambridge Golf Club in Cambridge on the weekend.

“I was worried when I heard another player was one-under,” said Tai after his win, “I just thought to myself ‘don’t make any big numbers’.” Second place in the division went to Matt Gerber, 15, of Kitchener, (76), while there was a tie for third place at 77 between Jordan Williamson, 15, of Cambridge, and Javier Diaz, 16, of Woodbridge.

Mississauga’s Neil Khosla, 17, cited his approach shots as key to his winning the Boys 17-19 division after firing 75. “This is my first MJT win and it feels great!” he said, after being ‘in the zone’ coming down the stretch. Two strokes back was Luke Harland, 17, of Ashburn (77), while third place went to Declan Kaster, 17, of Ayr, after he posted a 78.

The closely contested Girls division was won by Jillian Moran, 16, of Kitchener, who shot 91 to beat runner-up Kirsten Degutis, 16, of Waterloo, by three strokes. “I hit a lot of crisp irons onto the green, putting for birdie,” said Moran. “I started to fall apart on 16 so I was looking forward to the last putt. I feel really good, this is my first tournament victory!” MJT newcomer Monica Gabriele, 13, of Mississauga, took third place after shooting 95.

Joel Albany, 13, of Georgetown, said he had to ‘hit some greens and make some putts’ for a three stroke lead over Max Clift, 11, of Kitchener, to win the Boys 13 and under division with a score of 81. “It was close at the end. I’m happy about winning – this is my first tournament win.” Connor Doucette, 12, of Waterloo, came in third place (91).

The divisional winners in the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition were Joel Albany, Sean Carlino, 15, of Hamilton, Brett Kennedy, 17, of Kitchener, and Jillian Moran. The Sundog Skills competition divisional winners were Max Clift, Dylan Hamara, 16, of Cambridge, Luke Harland and Kirsten Degutis. There were also many draw prize winners in the tournament.

The next stop on the MJT One Day Series is at Stratford Golf Club in Stratford on September 12th. The remainder of the series plays out on September 26th in Listowel, October 10th in Guelph and October 24th back in Cambridge.
