RIZZETTO REIGNS IN THE RAIN

PARIS, ON. - (July 27, 2009) – On the same weekend as the Canadian Open, junior golfers competed in the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s (MJT) Quagmire Golf Classic at Paris Grand Golf Club in Paris, and endured the same wet conditions as the professionals, battling weather both days to get 27 holes completed after severe thunderstorms left the course unplayable on Sunday.

Quagmire Golf is a Toronto based clothing company and the first of its kind targeting young people that enjoy golf and want to look good while they are doing it. Quagmire's slogan "not fit for the fairway" is exactly what it says - at Quagmire Golf it doesn’t matter if you hit the ball into the “weeds or quagmire” as long as you have fun doing it – and at the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s rain-soaked Paris stop, this played out!

Despite the rain, Mike Rizzetto, 18, of Brantford, reigned supreme over the competition, shooting 74-36 (110) for the shortened tournament to win the Boys 17-19 Quagmire Golf Classic title and an exemption into a Future Collegiate World Tour (FCWT) event of his choice in the USA. “My birdie on the first hole was a highlight for me,” he said. “I drove the ball well. The MJT is a lot of fun and I feel very happy about winning.” Tied for second place in this division at 113 total score was Declan Kaster, 17, of Ayr (75-38) and Jason Watchorn, 17, of Waterloo (74-39).

Matt LeMay, 13, of Waterloo, continued to dominate in the Boys 13 and under division, and fired great scores of 72-37 (109) for victory in his division. “My short game was key to winning in that rain,” he stated. “It feels good to win with all the bad shots I had.” Keaton Jones, 13, of Kitchener, shot very good rounds of 78-37 (115) to finish second, and third place in the division went to Joel Albany, 13, of Georgetown, who carded 82-44 (126).

MJT newcomer, Luca Trisi, 16, of Toronto, was victorious in his first MJT outing after capturing the Quagmire Golf Classic Boys 14-16 title with scores of 74-42 (116). Trisi commented, “Chipping in on the 7th hole for bogey was a highlight for me, but overall I just stayed focused and tried not to do anything too heroic. It feels really good to win, I just wish I didn't make triple on the last hole.” Runner-up in the division, Brett Kennedy, 16, of Kitchener, was two strokes back (79-39=118) and Gregory Cooke, 16, of Cambridge, placed third (79-42=121).

The Girls division saw Kirsten Degutis, 15, of Waterloo, emerge as the clear winner after she carded 92-43 (135). “This win is another great accomplishment on my golf journey,” she said. “I was focusing and concentrating on playing my best and not focusing on score.” Jillian Moran, 16, of Kitchener, took second place with scores of 101-47 (148) and MJT newcomer Alisha Corringham, 13, of Pickering, closed with a 48 to move into third place (113-48=161).

The divisional winners in the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition were Joel Albany, Javier Diaz, 16, of Woodbridge, Declan Kaster and Jillian Moran. The Sundog Skills competition divisional winners were Max Clift, 11, of Kitchener, Charlie Awde, 15, of Ayr, Mike Rizzetto and Kirsten Degutis.

The next MJT event in Ontario is the three day Ontario Tour Championship at Grey Silo Golf Club in Waterloo, which is the final multi-day tournament prior to the one day fall series in Cambridge, Stratford, Listowel and Guelph.
