MOUG CROWNED MJT-PGA OF ALBERTA JUNIOR BOYS 17-19 CHAMPION
Calgary, AB – (August 7, 2009) – Players on the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT) battled it out this past week under difficult weather conditions at McKenzie Meadows Golf Club in Calgary during the MJT-PGA of Alberta Junior Championship, seeking to qualify for the Texas Junior Golf Tour’s (TJGT) Holiday Classic at Barton Creek, Austin, Texas, this December.
Heavy rains forced shortening of the three day tournament to two days (August 5th and 6th) and John Moug, 17, of Calgary, topped the field to take the low overall score and MJT-PGA of Alberta Junior Boys 17-19 Champion’s trophy, clinching the spot to the major event in Texas. Constant mist was not enough to dampen Moug’s stellar game as he finished the two rounds at two-under-par (73-69). Moug was excited about his finish, saying “this is my first big win, it makes me believe that I can win again. I hit it straight, hit a lot of greens and tried to be consistent.” Moug never knew he held the lead until the last hole. “Connor (O’Reilly) had me worried late in the round, I knew that I was winning on the last tee and just tried to play safe, nothing greedy!”
Runner-up Connor O’Reilly, 17, of Edmonton, had two consistent rounds of 72, playing the tough and well-manicured McKenzie Meadows course at even par for the tournament (144 total score.) Rounding out the top three in the 17-19 division was first round leader Gage Murphy, 19, of Rosebud, who went 71-75 (146) to finish the event at two-over-par.
