DAVID BROTHERS DOMINATE IN BELOEIL ON CANADA DAY

BELOEIL, QC –The first of three tournaments scheduled for Quebec this season on the Boston Pizza-presented Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT), Canada’s only national junior tour run by Canadian PGA Professionals, was held June 30th and July 1st at Beloeil Golf Club. MJT Tournament Director, Tom Bissegger, CPGA, reported the course to be in excellent shape with players enjoying perfect weather conditions for the two day competition.

Vallee du Richelieu member Sebastien David, 17, of Longuiel, captured low overall honours and Boys 17 & up title with scores of 79-76 for a two day total of 155 over second place finisher and local Beloeil GC player Patrick Duquette, 17, who scored 160 (78,82). David, who managed to increase his 1-stroke first round lead to 5-strokes by the end of 36 holes, also claimed the Sundog Eyewear Skills Competition award. "Patrick was very tough and playing well up to the 14th, " said David of the competition, adding the key to his victory was that his iron play was very accurate. Tyler Collett, 18, of St. Lambert Golf Club and Greenfield Park, closed with 92-86 (178) for third place.

Not to be outdone by his older brother, 15-year-old Guillaume David took top honours in the Boys 14-16 division with rounds of 80, 82 (162), two strokes ahead of Sebastien Guay of Ste-Catherine and St-Remi golf course who carded 86,78 (164). "Sebastien had me worried coming down the stretch," said David, adding he found "hitting the most greens in regulation" that he could helped him play consistently for the win. Jonathan Poissant, 16, from St-Michel and Triangle d'Or, took third place with 169 total (85-84). Guay also won the Sundog Eyewear Skills Competition while Beloeil GC member Carl Tremblay, 15, took Mr. Lube Long Drive honours in the division.

In the Boys 13 and Under division, Hugo Bernard, 13, from Rouville golf course and St. Basile-le-Grand, rallied back from a 5 stroke deficit after 18 holes to dominate with a two day winning score of 175 (93-82), as well as the divisional Sundog Eyewear Skills and Mr. Lube Long Drive competition awards. David Daneault, 13, of Drummondville and Dr'ville golf course, who was tied for the lead after the first round with Simon Tremblay, 13, of Beloeil, finished in second place with scores of 88-89 (177) while Tremblay took third spot after a difficult second round (88-100). Bernard said his successful performance resulted from “playing well when things got difficult and taking one shot at a time."

The next stop on the MJT Quebec Series will be held at Club de Golf Sorel in Tracy, QC, on July 28th and 29th, followed by the final provincial stop at Club de Golf Rive-Sud in St-Basile-le-Grand on August 7th and 8th. Both events will qualify players for international exemptions and offer lots of tournament benefits including tee gift, trophies/prizes for top finishers, long drive and closest-to-the-pin competitions, draw prizes, refreshments and much more!
