Dale and Banks join MJT Team Canada to Scotland and Mexico

ANTIGONISH, NS: Great weather on day two made up for very wet conditions on day one in the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s MJT Atlantic Canada Series at Antigonish Golf Club this past weekend, where players vied for spots on MJT Team Canada to both the Scotland Kingdom of Fife Matches in St. Andrews, U.K. and to the International Junior Golf Invitational (IJGI) in Cuernavaca, Mexico.

Not deterred by a three hour rain delay on day one, Craig Dale, 17, of Truro, NS, fired 74-70 for a 144 total to easily win the Boys 17 and up division title, also claiming low overall score in the field and the spot to Scotland. “This is great competition on a very tight course that requires good shot placement,” he said. “It means a lot to me to put together two good rounds and come out on top.” Runner-up in this group was Mark Canfield, 17, of Malagash, NS, who shot 76-81 (157), while Dylan Coady, 17, of Antigonish, posted scores of 82-77 (159) to take third place. Coady won the division’s Sundog Closest-to-the-Pin (KP) competition, and Dale won the Mr. Lube Long Drive.

The spot on MJT Team Canada to Mexico was claimed by Eric Banks, 15, of Truro, NS, who took the Boys 14-16 division title in style, shooting 74-73 (147). “The highlight was when I came back in the first round to shoot two over when I was four over after the first four holes,” he said. “Playing MJT really shows you what part of your game you need to work on because your weaknesses are magnified under the tournament pressure. It means a lot to hold off all these other great golfers.” Second place in this division went to Ryan MacPherson, 15, of Marigomish, NS, who shot 78-73 (151) and Sean Fraser, 16, of Sackville, NS, came in third (81-76=157). Fraser won the division’s Mr. Lube Long Drive competition and Banks won the Sundog KP.

Brynn Tomie, 16, of Bedford, NS, played consistent golf shooting back-to-back rounds of 83 to beat Kyla McIsaac, 19, of Kentville (89-84) and win the Girls division. “Winning this tournament showed me that my mental game has improved because at times it was hard to stay in it,” said Tomie. “Also, it has given me some confidence since this was my first tournament of the season.”

Cody Locke, 13, of Brookfield, NS, who cited his tournament highlight as winning the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition, posted scores of 90-84 (174) to also take the division scoring title after edging local Neal Ryan, 13. “My goals are to have fun and play the best I can!” said Locke. Ryan shot 88-87 (175) on his home course and also won the Sundog KP competition; Bruce Tomie, 13, of Bedford, was only one stroke back of Ryan to finish third (93-83=176).

This season-opener tees off a series of MJT tournament stops in the province again this year, each qualifying junior golfers for major international events; the next is at The Mountain Golf Club in Truro on June 21st and 22nd, a triple qualifier for the Texas Junior Masters in San Antonio, the CKG Tour World Championship in Myrtle Beach, and the Canada International Friendship Cup in British Columbia. This is followed by the MJT-CPGA Atlantic Junior Championship at the Links at Penn Hills, Shubenacadie, on August 4th and 5th – a qualifier for the China Junior Open 2009.
