MANY GREAT SCORES ON MOTHER’S DAY AT MJT’S MEADOWS STOP
Players qualify for events in New York and South Carolina

EAST ST. PAUL, MB – The Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s (MJT) season-opener in Manitoba was held at The Meadows Golf Club in East St. Paul on May 10th and 11th, a triple qualifier for three major international events. Exemptions to be awarded included spots to the East Aurora International Junior Masters (EAIJM) in New York State, and to the CKG Tour World Championship in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

Some outstanding scores were posted by the young golfers despite the freezing cold, starting with a 2-under-par two-day total of 140 from Burke Nagle, 19 of Winnipeg, MB (72-68), who edged out Derek East, 18, also of Winnipeg, by just one stroke to clinch the spot for low overall score and the Boys 17 and up division title. East posted a 69 on day two to finish at 72-69=141, while third place in the division was claimed by Burke Wiebe, 17, also of Winnipeg, who shot the low round for the tournament of 5-under-par to vault up the ranks (75-67=142). Wiebe, who qualified for MJT Team Canada to Mexico in 2007, now receives the exemption into the EAIJM for boys aged 14 to 17.

In the Boys 14-16 division, Aaron Cockerill, 16 of Stony Mountain, MB, led the pack with confidence on day two with an impressive 73 to secure the first place title with a total score of 149. Cockerill receives a paid entry into the CKG Tour World Championship in South Carolina as a result. The rest of the division fought hard for the remaining top spots culminating in a three way tie for second place at 154 total score between Scott Mazur, 15, of Winnipeg (78-76), Steve Minion, 16, also of Winnipeg (76-78) and Myles Sullivan, 15, of Portage la Prairie, MB (75-79).

Brenden Setter, 13 of Selkirk, MB, showed amazing fortitude with a 10 stroke improvement on his day one score to secure a four stoke lead, grabbing the top spot in the Boys 13 and under division with an outstanding two day total of 164 (87-77). Second place went to Peter Takis, 13 of Winnipeg, MB, who shot 82-86 (168) and managed to hold Brendan Baldwin, 13, of St. Adolphe, MB (86-84=170) at bay by just two strokes for another close finish.

The Girls division proved equally exciting with Lindsay Stewart, 17, of Selkirk, claiming the first place spot with a two-day total score of 162 (83-79). Jessie Choi, 16 of Winnipeg, secured second place (91-83=174) by just two strokes over Kayla Ketcheson, 16, of St. Andrews, MB, who finished third (93-83=176).

The divisional winners in the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition were Brenden Setter, Myles Sullivan, Adrian Kibsey, 17, of Winnipeg, and Lindsay Stewart. The Sundog Skills competition divisional winners were Peter Takis, Brett Thompson 14 of Winnipeg, Burke Nagle and Bri-Ann Tokariwski,15 of Winnipeg.

The MJT continues its Manitoba schedule next month on June 14th and 15th at South Interlake Golf Club in Warren (Winnipeg) – a qualifier for spots on MJT Team Canada to the Scotland Kingdom of Fife Junior Team Matches in St. Andrews, Scotland, UK, and to the International Junior Golf Invitational in Cuernavaca, Mexico.
