KALLIS CONTINUES WINNING STREAK ON MJT AT CLARESHOLM
13-year-old Teron shoots low round of the day

CLARESHOLM, AB – A full field of junior golfers on the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT) enjoyed the best day for golf in Southern Alberta in weeks – maybe for the year – on Father’s Day at The Bridges at Claresholm Golf Course in Claresholm, where the two-day MJT Macleod Savings and Credit Union Classic played out over the weekend.

There was good scoring all around despite standing water everywhere on the saturated golf course that will play host to the provincial junior boys championship next month. Red Deer’s Carson Kallis, 15, continued his strong play on the MJT and shot 68-72 (140) to win low overall score and the Boys 14-16 division title by three shots over Scott Malo, 16, of Calgary. Malo shot 70-73 (143) and Brett Greiner, 16, also of Calgary, posted back-to-back even par rounds of 72 to finish third. Kallis also won his division’s Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition; Dillon Batsel, 15, of Medicine Hat, won the Sundog Closest-to-the-Pin (KP) Competition.

In the Boys 17 and up division, Brett MacGillivary, 18, of Stony Plain, also continued his winning ways on the MJT by holding off Calgary’s Steven Scheidt, 17, by one shot to win with scores of 69-72 (141). MacGillivary was three-under for the tournament, while Scheidt charged hard on the second day to finish at two-under-par (72-70=142). “I didn't realize until the 18th tee that I had a one-shot lead,” said MacGillivary. “Putting was key for me - the greens were difficult and I made a few (putts).” Finishing third in this division was Chris Cooke, 17, of Canmore, who posted scores of 70-76 (146). Calgarians Nathan Paul, 17, and Kevin Kang, 17, won the division’s Mr. Lube Long Drive and Sundog KP Competitions respectively.

Cecilia Jeon, 16, of Calgary, fired 79-78 (157) to easily win among the Girls in the Macleod Savings and Credit Union-sponsored event, attributing her victory to her putting. Runner-up was Laura Jensen, 19, of Picture Butte, who shot 91-84 (175) while third place went to Cecilia’s sister, Rosie Jeon, 13, who posted scores of 93-89 (182) and also won the division’s Sundog KP competition. Cecilia won the division’s Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition.

Another Red Deer junior golfer, Jesse Teron, 13, shot a career best 69 and low round of the day on Sunday to finish at 76-69=145 total score, running away with the Boys 13 and under division title. “It feels awesome to win because I shot the lowest round of my life!” he said. Placing second in the division was Ian Mmbando, 13, of Lethbridge, with scores of 81-75 (156) while third spot went to Zachery Pardiac, 13, also of Lethbridge (86-88=174). Teron added the division’s Mr. Lube Long Drive and Sundog KP prizes to his haul.

The next tournament on the MJT’s Alberta schedule is the MJT 1st Choice Savings Series at Picture Butte Golf Club on July 15th and 16th – a qualifier for MJT Team Canada in the Canada International Friendship Cup matches against Mexico and U.S.A. at Northview Golf Club in Cloverdale, BC, this August.
