FRASER WINS MJT SPOT TO CHINA IN PENN HILLS PLAYOFF

SHUBENACADIE, NS – A major event on the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT), endorsed by the Canadian Professional Golfers’ Association of Atlantic Canada, played out August 7th and 8th at the Links at Penn Hills in Shubenacadie, NS. The 36-hole MJT-CPGA Atlantic Junior Championship is part of a series of national events pioneered by the MJT in conjunction with the provincial CPGA zones, and was a qualifier for the China Junior Open 2008.

Ashburn Golf Club’s Sean Fraser, 16, of Sackville, NS, lost a ball on the last hole to double-bogey and tie for the low overall score with Sean Stuart, 17, of Bedford, NS, forcing a play-off for the spot to China. Fraser won the two-hole playoff after both made par on the 437 yard Par Four 18th hole the first time, but Fraser’s sand save for par the second time gave him the victory as Stuart could not get up and down to continue the playoff. “It feels great to win,” said Fraser, who also takes home the Boys 14-16 division title with his scores of 73-79 (152). “To see some of the names that were here this week it feels really good to come out on top. The highlight was just simply making the putt on the second play-off hole to win. I put in a lot of hard work on all parts of my game, and finally this week it all came together.”

Runner-up in the Boys 14-16 division was Mark Canfield, 16, of Malagash, NS, who shot 75-80 (155). Third place went to Cody Scott, 15, of Bridgewater, NS, after he carded rounds of 80-76 (156).

Stuart, also an Ashford Golf Club junior, was the Boys 17 and up division champion with his back-to-back scores of 76. Runner-up was John Sogorka, 17, of Wolfville, NS, who shot 79-78 (157), while Robert Wickstrom, 17, of Oakfield, NS, claimed third place in the division (79-79=158).

The MJT-CPGA Atlantic Junior Boys 13 and under champion was Riley Giffen, 13, of Stewiacke, NS, who enjoyed his home course advantage and fired 81-85 (166). “The highlight of the tournament for me, other than winning my division, was a birdie on the 34th hole and winning at my home course,” said Giffen. “It feels good because I know I'm one of the best in my age group.”

Runner-up was Dave MacDonald, 13, of Antigonish, who posted scores of 86-87 (173), and third place finisher was Cody Locke, 13, of Brookfield, NS (86-88=174).

Kyla MacIsaac, 19, of Kentville, the sole girl competitor who is en route to college this fall, shot 83-83 (166).

The divisional winners in the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition were Riley Giffen, Chris MacDonald, 16, of Calgary, Alberta, and Ethan Janes, 17, of Granville Ferry, NS. The Sundog Skills Competition divisional winners were Cody Locke, Marcus Van Oirschot, 15, of Antigonish, and Drew Smith, 18, of Halifax, NS.
