Fawcett Wins Playoff to Join Loewen on MJT Team Canada

EAST ST. PAUL, MB – The Manitoba season-opener on the Boston Pizza-presented Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT) was held at The Meadows Golf Course in East St. Paul on May 12th and 13th - a double qualifier for two major international events. Players from all over Manitoba and parts of Ontario competed for spots on MJT Team Canada to the Scotland Kingdom of Fife Junior Team Matches in the U.K., and on MJT Team Canada to the International Junior Golf Invitational (IJGI) in Cuernavaca, Mexico.

The weather was beautiful with some wind, which dried out and hardened the greens, making playing tough when combined with some tricky pin placements.

This, however, did not deter four-year MJT veteran Matt Loewen, 18, of Winkler, MB, who fired rounds of 73-73 (146) to win the Boys 17 and up division as well as low overall score and a spot on MJT Team Canada. Runner-up in this division was Tristan Schneider, 18, of La Salle, MB, who shot 71-78 (149). There was a three-way tie for third place at 153 total score between John Moon, 18, of Winnipeg (79-74), Tyler Friesen, 19, of Kane, MB (77-76), and Peter Moon, 17, of Winnipeg (74-79).

The Boys 14-16 winner was decided after a play-off between two juniors which showcased their determination to make MJT Team Canada: after tying at 148 after 36 holes, 16-year-old Clandeboye junior Kody Fawcett (71-77) chipped in for eagle on the first playoff hole to win over a birdie shot by Burke Wiebe, 16, of Winnipeg (76-72). Fawcett secured the second international team exemption and division title. Third place went to Adrian Kibsey, 16, of Winnipeg, who shot back-to-back rounds of 75 for a 150 total score.

In the Boys 13 and under division, big hitter Ryley Pace, 13, of Red Lake, ON, used his driving length to his advantage and won with scores of 83-89 (172). P. Daniel Munroe, 13, of Winnipeg, fired 91-87 (178) to finish second in the division, while Brendan Baldwin, 12, of St. Adolphe, MB, placed third just one stroke back (92-87=179).

After a close duel on day two in the Girls division, Chelsea Hummelt, 16, of East Selkirk, MB, beat Bri-Ann Tokariwski, 14, of Winnipeg, by two strokes. Hummelt carded 90-83 (173) while Tokariwski shot 87-88 (175). Third place spot went to Ashley Fredette, 16, of Winnipeg, who shot 93-92 (185).

The divisional winners in the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition were Ryley Pace, Burke Wiebe, Trent Adams, 17, of Winnipeg, and Jenna Roadley, 13, also of Winnipeg. The Sundog Skills competition divisional winners were Kyle Collins, 13, of Winnipeg, Austin Steinberger, 16, of East Selkirk, Tristan Schneider, and Jessie Choi, 15, of Winnipeg.

The Manitoba schedule on the MJT continues on July 3rd and 4th at St. Boniface Golf Club in Winnipeg, a double qualifier for spots in the CAN/USA Team Matches in Tempe, Arizona, and in the Canada China Friendship Cup International in Delta, BC.
