McKenzie and Germann Qualify for MJT Team Canada at Cambridge

CAMBRIDGE, ON – The second stop in Ontario on the Boston Pizza-presented Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT) was held at Cambridge Golf Club on May 26th and 27th - a double qualifier for spots on MJT Team Canada to the Scotland Kingdom of Fife Junior Team Matches in the U.K., and on MJT Team Canada to the International Junior Golf Invitational (IJGI) in Cuernavaca, Mexico, both scheduled for August 2007.

Brent McKenzie, 15, of Cambridge, continued his winning ways on the MJT by firing 75-70 (145) to win low overall and the Boys 14-16 division title, capturing his second spot in an international competition. McKenzie, who qualified on the MJT earlier in the season for the International Junior Masters in East Aurora, New York, will now also travel to St. Andrews in Scotland with the MJT Team. “My putting helped contribute to my overall success at this exceptional golf course and tournament, due to my golf instructor, Dave Smallwood, helping me between rounds,” he stated. “I knew I had won when I hit my pitching wedge to 20-feet on the final hole of the golf tournament.”

Runner-up to McKenzie in his division was Mike Rizetto, 16, of Brantford, who shot 79-74 (153). First round leader Brendan Leonard, 16, of Cambridge, followed up his opening 72 with an 84 to settle for third place at 156 total score.

Bryan Germann, 18, of Kitchener, fired back-to-back rounds of 74 to close at 148 for the tournament, edging both Kevin Palmer and Johnny Hall by one stroke for the Boys 17 and up division title and qualifying for the team spot to the IJGI in Mexico. “I was pretty nervous coming down the stretch but I made sure I played smart,” said Germann. “I played the back nine to even par to overtake the lead. Key to my win was the good competition and good putting.” Tied at 149 behind Germann was Palmer, 18, of Sarnia (73-76) and Hall, 18, of Langton, (72-77).

In the Boys 13 and under division, winner Robert Bennett, 12, of Cambridge, posted scores of 81-84 (165) to beat both Truman Tai and Matthew Speyer by three shots. “Making putts and having a good coach helped me win,” said Bennett. Tai, 13, of Markham, and Speyer, of Cambridge, both shot 85-83 to tie for second spot at 168. Christian Jeffery, 13, of Burlington, claimed fourth place in the division (89-83=172).

The divisional winners in the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition were Sean Carlino, 13, of Hamilton, Mike Rizetto and Ben Deignan, 18, of Cambridge. The Sundog Skills competition divisional winners were Truman Tai, Jordan Ryan, 15, of Brantford, and Vincent Castronovo, 17, of Oak Ridges.

The MJT Ontario schedule continues June 9th and 10th at Osprey Valley Golf Club near Orangeville. This tournament is also a qualifier for spots in the Texas Junior Masters at Colovista Country Club in Bastrop, TX, this July.
