McKenzie Qualifies for Int’l Junior Masters on MJT

PETERSBURG, ON – The Ontario season-opener on the Boston Pizza-presented Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT) was a double qualifier for two major international events held at Rebel Creek Golf Club in Petersburg on May 5th and 6th. Exemptions to be won were in the 55th annual East Aurora International Junior Masters (EAIJM) in East Aurora, New York, and the World Youth Team Challenge at Bolingbrook Golf Club in Illinois, USA.

Brent McKenzie, a three-year veteran on the MJT, fired rounds of 79-71 (150) to win the Boys 14-16 division as well as low overall score and the EAIJM exemption. McKenzie, 15, of Cambridge, ON, won his division title by five strokes. Tied for second spot at 155 total score were Brad Burgess, 14, of Caistor Centre, ON, and Brian Jurkiewicz, 13, of Hamburg, NY, who played up a division.

Josh Bamberger, 17, of Waterloo, ON, beat Ben Deignan, 17, of Cambridge on the fourth playoff hole to win the Boys 17 and up division title. Both players had tied at 151 total score. Third place in the division was a tie between Travis Horvath, 17, of Tillsonburg, ON, and Johnny Hall, 18, of Langton, ON, both of whom fired rounds of 79-76 (155).

The Boys 13 and under champion was Wade Chen, 12, of Toronto, ON, who ran away with the title after shooting 75-74 (149). Truman Tai, 12, of Markham, ON, took second spot (79-81=160), while Matthew Speyer, 13, of Cambridge, placed third (82-79=161).

Meg Pototschnik, 16, of Stratford, ON, easily won the Girls division title after posting scores of 80-86 (166). Pototschnik also won her division’s Mr. Lube Long Drive and Sundog Skills Competitions. Other divisional winners of the Long Drive were Sean Carlino, 13, of Hamilton, ON, Justin DaSilva, 16, of Cambridge, and Ben Deignan, while Sundog Skills divisional winners were Matt LeMay, 11, of Waterloo, and Andrew Trotman, 19, of Port Elgin, ON.

The finalist for exemption into the World Youth Team Challenge in Illinois was shortlisted to Wade Chen, for boys aged 12. Brad Burgess and Matt LeMay are already exempt for boys aged 14 and 11 respectively.

The Ontario schedule on the MJT continues on May 26th and 27th at Cambridge Golf Club in Cambridge, a double qualifier for spots on MJT Team Canada to the Scotland Kingdom of Fife Junior Team Matches in the U.K., and to the International Junior Golf Invitational (IJGI) in Cuernavaca, Mexico.
