KOO CAPS OFF SUCCESSFUL SEASON AT MJT CANACCORD CAPITAL CITY SERIES

Vancouver, BC – Fraserview Golf Club in Vancouver hosted the final tournament in the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s Canaccord Capital City Series, capping off a successful run of three events for junior golfers.

MJT National Tour Champion for Boys 14-16, John Koo, 16, of Langley, BC, played a consistent game to shoot 73 and win low overall score as well as his age division title. Koo, who edged Dong Su, 16, of Richmond, BC, by one stroke, said, “When I first went out, I thought Dong was going to win. I shot one-under on the back and gained momentum. On 18, I chose to lay-up, which was smart because Dong ended up making bogey there. I’m happy about that decision.” Su placed second with a 74, followed by James Park, 14, of Vancouver, BC, who took third place in the division with a score of 76.

The Boys 17 and up division was scooped by first-time MJT winner, Ryan Schnell, 21, of Vancouver. Schnell managed to close one stroke better than four competitors, shooting a 76 to their 77s. “I was resilient after missing two one-foot putts,” said Schnell. “My driving was pretty good. I kept (the ball) in play and was hitting it 300 (yards).” The four-way tie for second place in the division went to three players from Surrey, BC - Aaron Hale, 21, Ryan Stannard, 19, and Jordan Price, 17, and Vancouver’s Jerron Sarai, 17.

A three-way tie for first place in the Boys 13 and under division was held between Mason Pimentel, 12, of Richmond, Nicholas Russell, 13, of Vancouver, and Jay Kim, 13, of Surrey. All three players fired rounds of 76.

Another tie for top spot was in the Girls division, where both Anica Heera Yoo, 13, of Port Coquitlam, BC, and Victoria Choi, 14, of New Westminster, BC, fired 77 to share the lead. Anica claimed her highlight as an eagle on the 12th hole. In third place just one stroke back at 78 was 14-year-old Alyssa Leung of Vancouver.

David Lee of Coquitlam repeated his success as the best 10-year-old in the field after posting a score of 84. A notable mention goes to 5-year-old Lorenzo Cordero of Delta, BC, who shot 136 for 18 holes, and 7-year-old Perry Xin of Vancouver, who shot 110.

The divisional winners in the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition were Seam Moen, 13, of North Vancouver, Dong Su, Ryan Schnell and Alyssa Leung. The Sundog Skills competition divisional winners were Nicholas Russell, Dong Su, Marc Hernandez, 19, of Richmond, and Keanna Mason, 10, of Maple Ridge, BC.

The success of the MJT Canaccord Capital City Series of one day tournaments, which offer an introduction to Tour golf for new players with a chance to play with some of the best juniors in the province, will result in more being introduced earlier next season, starting in Spring Break in BC.
