BREDY QUALIFIES FOR CAN/USA MATCHES IN ARIZONA

TURNER VALLEY, AB – The Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour held a two-day tournament at Turner Valley Golf Club in Turner Valley, AB, in excellent 25 degree Celsius weather this past August 1st and 2nd, where a field of competitive junior golfers competed for a spot on Maple Leaf Team Canada to the CAN/USA Matches at ASU Karsten Golf Course in Tempe, Arizona.

Amongst strong competition in the Boys 17 and up division, Craig Keck, 17, of Calgary, AB, made a birdie on the 18th hole to put intense pressure on Kevin Bredy, 18, also of Calgary, but Bredy made a steady par to win by one shot and qualify for the team spot. “My clutch putting made the difference,” he said, after posting scores of 72-71 (143). “Kyle Morrison had me worried, he’s a great player, but I made putts where I needed to. My eagle on number eight on day one was a highlight for me in the tournament. It feels good to win and hopefully I can build on it towards my college career.” Morrison, 19, of Red Deer, AB, shot 72-73 (145) to finish tied for third behind Keck (73-71=144) together with David Sissons, 19, of Calgary (73-72) and Spencer Harris, 18, of Winnipeg, MB, (72-73).

Bredy's score was also the low overall, earning him the spot on the four-player team to Arizona this December. Qualifying for the team spots has been at various MJT tournaments across Canada.

In the Boys 14-16 division, first-round leader Scott Walters, 16, of Okotoks, AB, dropped a few shots early on while Rhys Royer, 16, of Calgary, played steady all second round, eventually beating Walters by one stroke. “I might not have made par on 18 if I had known it was so close,” said Royer, who shot 75-72 (147). “Scott and Craig (Klassen) both dropped a lot of birdies starting the back nine but I made a few too and held them off. It feels really good to win the division because I put two good numbers on the board and winning by one is always a good feeling.” Klassen, 16, of Calgary, fired 73-77 (150) to place third behind Walters (71-77=148).

Riley Fleming, 13, of Airdrie, AB, shot 35 on the front nine on day two to get close to Brett Walsh, 12, of Calgary, but faltered on the back nine to let Walsh win his first MJT title. “My short game was excellent this week,” said Walsh, who shot 78-80 (158) and noted that the highlight of the tournament was Connor Mailey putting the ball to within one inch of the pin on the 16th hole and making birdie. Mailey, 13, of Calgary, shot 96-100 and finished in third place behind Fleming, who posted scores of 85-79.

The divisional winners in the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition were Mailey, Klassen and Patrick O’Doherty, 17, of Calgary. The Sundog Skills competition divisional winners were Stryder Montgomery, 11, of Strathmore, AB, Tanner Hicks, 14, of Calgary, and Kyle Morrison.
