HERITAGE POINTE HOSTS TOP WESTERN CANADA JUNIOR GOLF TOUR EVENT

CALGARY ? Over 120 of the West's most accomplished junior golfers were on hand to showcase their talents Monday and Tuesday when the Western Canada Junior Golf Tour hosted its premier Alberta event of the season.

The Alberta PGA Junior Championship, one of six WCJGT events supported by the Canadian Professional Golfers' Association, was staged at Heritage Pointe Golf Course, one of the province's top golf venues and the site of numerous past championships, including the Alberta Open.

Local golfer Rhys Royer shot 68-75 (143) to take top honors in the Boys 13-and-under division, while Nicholas Gagne of Richmond, B.C. posted rounds of 72-76 (148) to win the competitive Boys 14-16 division. Edmonton's David McGlone shot 75-73 (148) to earn the trophy among Boys 17 and up, while Susan Nam, also of Edmonton, shot 78-81 (159) to finish first among the girls.

All four agreed that it was a thrill to compete at Heritage Pointe.

"It was very nice," said Nam. "The course was in excellent shape." Nam credited her driver with her strong performance in the Mazda Canada-sponsored event, while Royer said it was his putting that helped him put away the win.
"I made the most of the five-foot," he said.

McGlone, who edged Calgary's Byron Olson by a single stroke - Olson shot 74-75 for a 149 finish - said his game combined a number of strengths.
"I hit the ball reasonably well, but putted really well," he said. Three golfers were tied for third spot among Boys 17 and up: Strathmore's Dallas Bassen, Red Deer's Mitch Evanecz and Lethbridge's Justin Nagy, all of whom had a 150 two-day tally.

Kenneth Chmela of Penticton, B.C. finished second among Boys 13 and under with rounds of 76-79 (155), while Dallas Mengel of Watrous, SK, shot 77-81 (158) to finish third.

Mitchell Fox of Okotoks posted even rounds of 75-75 (150) to emerge second in the boys 14 to 16 division, while Trevor Edwards of Calgary and Corey Kiland of Tumbler Ridge, B.C., each posted 152 two-day scores to finish tied for third.

Whitney Cox of Edmonton and Rylee Plitz of Innisfail were tied for second in the Girls divison, each shooting 172 two-day tallies.

The non-profit Western Canada Junior Golf Tour is presented by Boston Pizza and hosts events for boys and girls aged 10 to 23 in four age divisions. The Tour is building on its success in Western Canada by expanding into Ontario under the Nationwide Junior Golf Tour banner.

The 2003 season winds up with the Boston Pizza Tour Championship at Redtail Landing Golf Club in Edmonton, September 13-14. For more information, please call 1-877-859-GOLF or visit www.wcjgt.com.
