FIVE JUNIORS QUALIFY FOR FUTURE LINKS ONTARIO CHAMPIONSHIP

Abbotsford, B.C. ? Ledgeview Golf Course in Abbotsford hosted a Western Canada Junior Golf Tour event this past weekend, sponsored by the largest import dealership in the Fraser Valley, The Honda Way. The full field of 99 players from as far afield as Seattle to the Yukon enjoyed the fast greens and superb condition of the golf course, home to a number of champions including past PGA Tour winner Ray Stewart.

The Honda Way Junior at Ledgeview qualified five players for the Future Links Ontario Championship to be held at Oxford Golf Club in Woodstock, Ontario, July 14-17.

A number of personal bests highlighted the tournament, including an opening round 67 by Dave Smith from Mission, his first under par round scored in competition. Smith was beaten to the overall title in the Boys 17 and Up Division, however, by Abbotsford?s Brendon Hall, who hung on to take first place with his scores of 68-77 (145). Hall had the overall low score for the entire tournament, the second year in a row that he has won this event, and secured an exemption into the Future Links Ontario Championship.

Another personal best was scored by Marli Mikulecky from Osoyoos, BC, who shot a one-over-par 72 in the final round to win the Girls Division by four strokes over local favourite Chelsea Clark from Abbotsford. ?I hit a lot of fairways and greens both days,? said Mikulecky, ?When I birdied the second and third hole on Sunday, I felt I had a good chance at challenging for the lead.? Mikulecky shot 81-72 for a 153 total. In third place behind Clark was Kira Meixner from Richmond.

In the Girls Division both Mikulecky and Kristina Gargaro from Port Moody received exemptions into the Future Links Ontario Championship. Gargaro was the top finisher for Girls aged 13 and under (88-84=172).

In the Boys 14-16 Division, Nicholas Gagne from Richmond and Brendan Peters from Maple Ridge both tied for the lead with a total score of 152. Gagne took the title based on retrogression (best second day score) and received the Future Links Ontario exemption. In third place behind Peters was Nick McKnight from North Vancouver (79-77=156).

Riley Wheeldon from Comox put together an excellent second round of 72 to narrow the margin of victory for White Rock?s Jonnie Motomochi in the Boys 13 and under Division. Wheeldon shot 78-72 (150) to finish three shots behind Motomochi (73-74=147), whose consistency and talent merits his third Division title this season, and an exemption into the Future Links Ontario Championship.

The Sundog Skills Competition winners were Kristin Gargaro (Port Moody), Giwoun Bae (Coquitlam), Cameron Harris (Maple Ridge), Nicholas Laba (Vancouver) and Marco Redavid (Delta).

The non-profit Western Canada Junior Golf Tour is presented by Boston Pizza and hosts tournaments for boys and girls aged 10 to 23 in four age divisions. The Tour is building on its success in the four Western provinces by expanding into Ontario this summer under the Nationwide Junior Golf Tour banner.

The next local event is the Cattermole Timber Junior at Belmont GC in Langley, June 21-22. For more information, please call 1-877-859-GOLF.
