WELLINGS WRAPS SEASON IN STYLE ON MAPLE LEAF JUNIOR GOLF TOUR

Flamborough, ON ? The final 2004 event for the six-year-old Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT) concluded this week at the Century Pines Golf Club in Flamborough, where the juniors enjoyed some good golfing weather and the last chance to try and qualify for the MJT National Tour Championship in British Columbia before the end of the summer season.

Jason Wellings from West Flamborough used his local knowledge to full advantage and claimed the low overall score as well as the Boys 17 and up division title.

?I hit the ball solid and managed to sink some putts on the second day,? said Wellings, who shot 77-69 for a 146 total score. ?I loved the course, conditions were great, and I was happy that I was able to come back from behind and finally put in a solid round.?

Runner-up to Wellings was Mike Mottola from Niagara Falls, who recently returned from playing in the International Junior Golf Team Matches against Mexico and the United States as part of the Canadian contingent sent by the MJT. Mottola shot 74-77=151.

Third and fourth place went to Todd Hutcheson from Ingersoll (76-76=152) and Wesley Stanford from Angus (79-78=157), respectively.

The Boys 14-16 division title was won by Maximillian Bianchi from Woodbridge, who closed with a 70 to move clear ahead into first place. ?I felt like I was due for a win,? said Bianchi (77-70=147).

First round division leader Braeden Cryderman from Huntsville had to settle for second place with scores of 75-78=153. Third place went to Eric Velanoff from Waterloo (77-78=155) and fourth place to Michael Lawrence from Richmond, BC (79-77=156).

Gajan Sivabalasingham from Markham won the Boys 13 and under division with scores of 77-79=156. ?The approach shots I hit were good,? said Sivabalasingham, ?and I feel really good (about winning).?

Spencer Buck from Etobicoke placed second (78-81=159), followed by Brian Churchill-Smith from Oakville in third place (81-81=162) and Kevin Lawrence from Richmond, BC, in fourth (86-88=174).

Division winners in the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition were Kevin Lawrence, Bianchi and Daniel Kavanagh from Scarborough.

The Sundog Eyewear Closest-to-the-Pin Competition division winners were Sivabalasingham, Velanoff and Hutcheson.

The qualified field of MJT players for the MJT Boston Pizza National Tour Championship at Crown Isle Golf Resort, Vancouver Island, BC, on September 18-19 will be announced by September 8 on the Tour?s website, www.maplejt.com.
