HOT STREAK CONTINUES FOR WONG ON MJT WITH 6-UNDER-PAR AT MCCLEERY

Vancouver, BC – BC Junior Champion Eugene Wong, 15, of North Vancouver, continued his winning ways on the Boston Pizza –sponsored Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour this past weekend, shooting a 6-under-par round on McCleery Golf Course.

McCleery was the second stop on the MJT’s special One Day Series in Vancouver, and featured junior golfers in four age divisions. “The highlight for me was making five birdies and an eagle to shoot 65,” said Wong, who took the low overall honours as well as the Boys 14-16 division title.

Sean Craigon, 15, of Maple Ridge, finished with a fine 69 to place second in the division, while Michael Lawrence, 15, of Richmond, shot 76 to claim third.

Fierce competition in the Boys 13 and under division saw one stroke separating the top finishers. 10-year-old Kevin Lee carded a winning score of 73 which was his best on the MJT to date. Lee, originally from Winnipeg and now Surrey, has radically improved on the Tour this season. “My first MJT tournament was at Swan-e-set (in March) and my score was 97 – now it is 73 (two over par),” stated Lee. “Five-under is my future goal.”

Chris Li, 13, of Coquitlam, once again claimed second place in the division in as many starts with a score of 74. Tied for third place with scores of 75 were Andy Yang, 12, also of Coquitlam, and Adam Svensson, 11, of Surrey.

Maple Leaf Team Canada member Seon Kim, 17, of Surrey, won the Boys 17 & up division, beating runner-up Matt Lister, 19, of Richmond, by two strokes. “It means a lot to me to win this tournament,” said Kim. “I know now what to fix about my game.”

Kim shot 73 to Lister’s 75, while third place went to Preston Pierson, 17, of Langley, who posted a score of 77.

14-year-old Ahnna Kim, of South Surrey, continued her fine form on the Tour shooting 73 to once again win the Girls division. “Playing on the MJT has definitely boosted my confidence,” she said.

Second place went to Jennifer Yang, 11, of Port Moody, who shot 81. Third place was a tie at 82 between Jisoo Keel, 10, of Coquitlam, and Hayley Geremia, 16, of Port Moody.

Division winners in the Mr. Lube Long Drive competition were Sam Lawson, 13, of Vancouver, Eugene Wong, Seon Kim and Hayley Geremia. Sundog Eyewear Closest-to-the-Pin competition divisional winners were Sean Craigon, Steven Farmer, 18, from Calgary, AB, and Jisoo Keel.

The MJT One Day Fall events are in partnership with the Vancouver Park Board and offer an introduction for new players to Tour golf with a chance to play with some of the best juniors in the province.
