ENERGETIC SMITH WINS MJT GEOCAN ENERGY CLASSIC

CALGARY, AB – The Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT) GEOCAN Energy Classic’s final round concluded yesterday at McKenzie Meadows Golf Club in Calgary, AB, where 16-year-old Cornel Smith of Regina, SK, fired 70-73 to finish at 143 for the low overall tournament score and Boys 14-16 division title.

The energetic Smith, whose aim is to qualify for the MJT Boston Pizza National Tour Championship in Banff this September, had competed the week before in an MJT event in British Columbia, and is moving on from the Albertan MJT event to one in Manitoba next week before returning to Saskatchewan.

Tournament Sponsor of the 36 hole tournament at McKenzie Meadows was GEOCAN Energy, a Calgary based, publicly traded company engaged in the exploration and production of crude oil and natural gas predominantly in Western Canada and in the Czech Republic.

Jack Wesche, 16, of Calgary, made a hard charge during the final round and posted a score of 69 to finish one stroke back of Smith (75-69=144), taking second place in the division. Third place went to J.D. Duffy, 15, also of Calgary, with scores of 74-73=147.

In the Boys 17 and up division, Tyler Kemp, 19, of Lethbridge (75-71), and Chase Osiowy, 18, of Calgary (73-73), tied for first place with a total score of 146. Peter Dushenski, 19, of Edmonton, placed third after shooting back-to-back rounds of 74 for a 148 total.

Brett Greiner, 13, of Calgary, claimed his second win in the Boys 13 and under division on the MJT this season after posting scores of 74-77 for a 151 total. Four strokes back was Dallas Mengel, 13, of Watrous, SK, who placed second with rounds of 78-77 (155), edging third place finisher Evan Cowan, 13, of Coaldale (81-75=156), by one stroke.

Breanne Neufeld, 15, of Coaldale, put together two solid rounds of 78 to win the Girls division title, beating runner-up Mackenzie Renner, 17, also of Coaldale, by two strokes. Renner shot 80-78 (158). Third place finisher, Kelly Amundrud, 14, of Calgary, shot 90-87 (177).

The division winners in the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition were Evan Cowan, Cornel Smith, Peter Dushenski and Mackenzie Renner. Dushenski and Renner also won their divisional Sundog Closest-to-the-Pin Competition, along with Jack Wesche and Tim McGowan (Calgary).

Some of the country’s top juniors have taken part in the MJT, such as Inah Park, the reigning Canadian junior girls’ champion, and Darren Wallace, the Canadian Men’s Amateur Champion. Seven out of the Top 10 RCGA nationally-ranked juniors in 2004 have played on the Tour, which is presented by Boston Pizza nationally and endorsed by PGA Tour veterans Dave Barr and Ray Stewart.

The next local event is the fourth annual MJT-Alberta PGA Junior Championship at Cougar Creek Golf Resort in Edmonton, August 15-17. For more information or to register please call 1-877-859-GOLF or visit the Tour’s website at www.maplejt.com.
