JOHNSON BREEZES PAST THE FIELD TO WIN THE MJT AT ST. BONIFACE/BREEZY BEND

WINNIPEG, MB –The final round of the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s event at St. Boniface and Breezy Bend Golf Clubs, which was re-scheduled due to rain, concluded yesterday under warm, sunny conditions.

Originally scheduled for July 10-11, the two-day event managed to complete the first round on St. Boniface on July 10, where first round leaders were Alex Crawford in Boys 13 and under (81), Ryan Cook and Matt Loewen in Boys 14-16 (tied at 73) and Eric Johnson and Jesse Skelton in Boys 17 and up, also tied at 73. The final round was re-scheduled to August 29 on Breezy Bend, with most players managing to accommodate the new date.

18-year-old Eric Johnson, of Winnipeg, breezed past the rest of the field to claim overall low score for the tournament and the Boys 17 and up division title with scores of 73-74 (147). Runner-up Jesse Skelton, 17, of St. Francois-Xavier, was one stroke back with scores of 73-75 (148).

“The highlight for me was playing solid on my home course to take the win,” said Johnson. “It means a lot to have another good showing in an MJT event.”

17-year old Matt Gray, of Winnipeg, took third place on countback after carding rounds of 74-79 (153).

The Boys 14-16 division title was won by Ryan Cook, 16, of Winnipeg, who fired rounds of 73-76 (149) over Matt Loewen, 16, of Winkler by 4 strokes.

Loewen shot 73-80 (153) while third spot was claimed by Kody Fawcett, 15, of Clandeboye, with scores of 75-79 (154).

In the Boys 13 and under division, 13-year-old Steve Minion of Winnipeg captured his third title this year after winning a playoff with Garrett Neiles and Alex Crawford. Minion carded rounds of 84-76 (160) while Neiles scores of 83-77 (160) earned him second place on countback over Alex Crawford's scores of 81-79 (160).

Minion also captured his division's Sundog Eyewear Closest-to-the-Pin competition, along with Peter Moon in Boys 14-16 and Andrew Gaudry in Boys 17 and up. The division winners in the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition were Sami Shukeir, Boys 13 and under and Corey Waver in Boys 14-16.

Some of the country’s top juniors have taken part in the MJT, such as Inah Park, the reigning Canadian junior girls’ champion, and Darren Wallace, the Canadian Men’s Amateur Champion. Seven out of the Top 10 RCGA nationally-ranked juniors in 2004 have played on the Tour, which is presented by Boston Pizza nationally and endorsed by PGA Tour veterans Dave Barr and Ray Stewart.

The invitation-only MJT Boston Pizza National Tour Championship wraps the regular season on September 10-11 at Banff Springs Golf Club in Banff, Alberta. For more information please call 1-877-859-GOLF or visit the Tour’s website at www.maplejt.com.
