SIZZLING SINGH SHOOTS 32 ON BACK NINE AT MJT CATTERMOLE TIMBER CLASSIC

Langley, BC ? Patience paid off for Jessie Singh, 17, of Surrey, this past weekend, in the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour?s Cattermole Timber Classic at Belmont Golf Club in Langley, which was in great shape after recently hosting the Canadian Tour Qualifying School.

Tying for the low overall score with Devin Carrey, 18, of South Surrey, Singh took home the Boys 17 & up winner's trophy based on his best second day score of 68.

Singh has paid his dues on the MJT, joining in 2002 and gradually witnessing the improvement in his game. ?This is my first tournament win,? he said, after scoring 73-68 (141). ?The MJT has taught me what parts of my game I need to work on in order to get better. The highlight was my 32 on the back nine ? it gives me a boost of confidence going into the summer.?

Carrey, who is winging his way to international team competitions in both Mexico and Scotland this August with the MJT, shot 72-69 (141). Third place in the division was a tie between Lucas Bogdan, 17, of Abbotsford (78-71=149) and Seon Kim, 17, of Surrey (76-73=149).

Fierce competition in the Boys 14-16 division saw the eight top players on the leaderboard finish within four strokes of the lead. Bill Hole, 16, of Vancouver, came from behind to win by two shots, beating Shaymus Hearn, 16, of Langley, and Curtis White, 15, of Maple Ridge, with rounds of 73-75 for 148 total score. ?I find the competitiveness and the variety of players on the MJT forces me to have a well rounded game,? said Hole, who has playing on the MJT for the past two years. ?I want to play university golf - winning this tournament means that my hard work has paid off.?

Hearn (76-74) and White (72-78) tied for second place in the division. A three-way tie for fourth place at 151 total score was held by Sean Craigon, 15, of Maple Ridge, Cameron Harris, 15, of Maple Ridge, and Michael Corboy, 16, of Langley.

In the Girls division, 15-year-old Kristina Gargaro of Port Moody shot 74-78 for the win, edging Sue Kim, 14, of Langley, by one stroke. ?To come back and play better than I did last week at the MJT at Point Roberts Golf Course was the highlight for me,? said Gargaro, who was recently profiled in Golfwest magazine as an up-and-coming young golfer. ?The MJT has good competition and keeps me focused on my game. My goal is to take golf to the highest level I can.?

Third place in girls went to Chelsea Kim, 15, of Port Coquitlam, who posted scores of 82-79 (161), and fourth spot was taken by Hayley Geremia, 15, of Port Moody, with back-to-back rounds of 85.

The last two holes proved to be the only challenge for Reid Martin, 13, of Mukilteo, Washington State, who was even par up until that point both days. Martin shot 74-73 (147) to win the Boys 13 and under division, beating runner-up Brian Cho, 12, of Pitt Meadows, by two strokes. Cho shot 76-73 (149). Third place was scooped by Matthew Hamilton, 13, of West Vancouver, who shot 77-75 (152), edging Adam Svensson, 11, of Surrey, by one stroke. Svensson shot 78-75 (153).

The division winners in the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition were Jay Kim, 12, of Surrey, Michael Corboy, Seon Kim and Chelsea Kim.

The Sundog Eyewear Closest-to-the-Pin Competition division winners were Reid Martin, Tanner Wilson, 16, of Kamloops, Steve Solosth, 19, of Mission, and Kristina Gargaro.

The next local tournament on the non?profit Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour, which is Canada?s only major junior tour run exclusively by Canadian PGA Professionals, is the 54-hole MJT Webber Naturals Okanagan Junior Championship at Okanagan Golf Club in Kelowna, July 11, 12 and 13.
