Ringo Runs Rings Around Heron Point at Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour Stop

ALBERTON, ON ? Young Jonny Ringo put together two great rounds despite the rainy weather this past week in the Boston Pizza-sponsored Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT) stop at Heron Point Golf Links in Alberton.

Ringo, from Brampton, shot 71-75 for a total score of 146 to win the Boys 13 and under division as well as the low overall score for the tournament. ?The main factors contributing to my win were my caddy book and my putting - it was on fire,? said Ringo. He added, ?I think the golf course over the last two days was very wet and the greens were much slower than usual.?

Second place in the division went to Jack Gibson of Fort Erie (79-80=159), third to Spencer Buck from Etobicoke (85-83=168) and fourth to Gajan Sivabalasingham from Markham (83-86=169).

The Boys 14-16 division was won by Braeden Cryderman from Huntsville, with scores of 76-74=150. ?On the first day my ball striking was good, and on the second day it was my short game,? said Cryderman, who rated the course in good shape although very wet.

Five strokes back in second place was Jordan Batten from Lakeshore (79-76=155), followed by Cody Pickard from Thornhill in third (80-76=156). Jarrod Batten placed fourth (77-83=160).

Jason Wellings from West Flamborough won the Boys 17 and up division with back-to-back rounds of 74 for a 148 total score. ?I was able to make some birdies here and there to keep my score down,? said Wellings, who hopes to qualify for the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour?s National Tour Championship at Crown Isle Golf Resort on Vancouver Island, BC, this September.

Runner up in the division was Wesley Stanford from Angus (76-77=153), followed by Zack Schnurr from Huntsville in third (81-73=154) and Daniel Bornais from Tecumseh in fourth (77-78=155).

In the Girls division, Carolyn Halinda from Fonthill notched up another victory on the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour with her second win this season. Halinda shot 84-87 for a 171 total score. ?My straight shots ? keeping it in the fairway ? helped me win. Consistent one putts, close chips, long drives,? said Halinda. ?I enjoyed the golf course ? you would be okay as long as you kept the ball out of the fescue.?

Four strokes back was runner up Natalie Desjardins from Haileybury (88-87=175) while third place went to Jenny Halinda from Fonthill (88-91=179).

Carolyn Halinda also won her division in both the Mr. Lube Long Drive and the Sundog Closest-to-the-Pin Competitions. Other division winners respectively were Ringo and Sivabalasingham in Boys 13 and under, Jordan Batten and Jarrod Batten in Boys 14-16, and Schnurr and Wellings in Boys 17 and up.

The non-profit Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour, now in its sixth season, hosts tournaments for boys and girls across Canada and is endorsed by PGA Tour veterans Dave Barr and Ray Stewart. It is the only major junior tour run exclusively by Canadian PGA Professionals. The final 2004 event in Ontario is at Century Pines Golf Club in Flamborough, September 2-3. Entries are still open for this event.
