HELGASON DOMINATES AT THE BUTTE

PICTURE BUTTE, AB ? Despite the recent flooding in the region and windswept conditions over this past weekend, Gary Helgason, 17, of Edmonton, destroyed Picture Butte Golf Club in the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour?s 1st Choice Savings Series event, firing rounds of 71-67 for a total six-under-par 138.

?I played well, never made any mistakes,? said Helgason, who won the low overall and the Boys 17 and up division title, holding off Tyler Kemp, 19, of Lethbridge. Kemp shot 77 in the first round and battled hard to get to four-under-par on the second day (77-68=145). Judd Blackwater, 17, of Fort MacLeod, played steady with rounds of 75-71 (146) to finish third.

In the Girls Division, Breanne Neufeld, 15, of Coaldale, fired two solid rounds of 76-79 (155) for a one shot victory over Bari-Lynn Erais, 17, of Lethbridge. Both girls started the second day tied for the lead. ?Even though my strategy was to just play my own game I thought about Bari-Lynn on almost every shot,? said Neufeld.

Finishing third was Anisha Chong, 14, of Lethbridge, who posted scores of 93-81 (174).

Jordan Ediger, 15, of Calgary, played solidly over two rounds to win the Boys 14-16 division. ?It was tough out there,? said Ediger. ?My game plan was to stay in the moment and play one shot at a time. Coming down 18 I just needed to make par to win.?

Ediger?s scores of 74-72 (146) gave him a one shot victory over Mark Schurer, 16, of Calgary, who finished with scores of 75-72 (147). Third place was claimed by Craig Gibson, 16, of Brooks, with scores of 75-73 (148).

In the Boys 13 and under division, Brett Greiner, 13, of Calgary, held off a late charge by Carson Kallis, 12, of Red Deer to win by one shot. ?I drove the ball well, focused, and made some 6 foot putts,? said Greiner, who fired rounds of 72-77 (149) while Kallis shot 76-74 (150).

Scott Malo, 13, of Calgary, placed third in the division with scores of 81-75 (156).

Greiner also won his division?s Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition. The other long drive winners were Oliver Hunter Davidson, 15, of Calgary, Blackwater and Erais. Blackwater added his division?s Sundog Eyewear Closest-to-the-Pin Competition to his wins. The other winners in this category were Matthew Vacy-Lyle, 13, of Drumheller, Lewis Chong, 16, of Lethbridge and Anisha Chong.

The next local tournament on the non?profit Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour, which is Canada?s only major junior tour run exclusively by Canadian PGA Professionals, is the MJT One Day Series at Magrath Golf Club in Magrath on July 5.
