SCORCHING EIGHT-UNDER-PAR SECURES FIRST SPOT TO SCOTLAND ON MAPLE LEAF JUNIOR GOLF TOUR

Coaldale, AB ? The Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT) held a double qualifier at Land-O-Lakes Golf Club in Coaldale this past weekend for berths on teams to two major international tournaments ? one in Scotland and one in the United States.

The two-day MJT 1st Choice Savings Series at Land-O-Lakes Golf Club had qualifying spots for the Maple Leaf Teams to both the Kingdom of Fife Team Matches in Scotland, August 19-26, and the 53rd annual East Aurora International Junior Masters in New York, June 27-July 1.

In near perfect weather conditions, Judd Blackwater, 17, of Lethbridge, AB, fired consecutive rounds of 67 to finish with a scorching total of 134 (8-under-par). Blackwater defeated Mitchell Fox, 17, of Okotoks, AB, by five strokes to win low overall honours, the Boys 17 and up division title and the first berth on the eight-player Maple Leaf Team to Scotland.

?I knew I had won when Mitch hit it in the water on 15,? said Blackwater. ?I played well, made lots of good shots.? Runner up Fox posted rounds of 69-70 (139) and receives an exemption into the International Junior Masters in New York.

Will Porter, 17, of Coaldale, AB, finished third in the division with scores of 72-71 (143).

In the Boys 14-16 division, Dale Stypula, 16, of Cranbrook, B.C., won with scores of 68-74 (142) after edging Jordan Orth, 16, also of Cranbrook, by a shot. Both players carded 68?s in the first round and were close throughout day two, however Orth missed a five foot putt on the last hole to finish second (68-75=143).

?I kept the ball in play and made some good putts,? said Stypula, who attended the New York event last year and now qualifies to make a repeat appearance in 2005.

Trent Colberg, 16, of Drumheller, AB, shot back-to-back rounds of 74 to finish third in the division.

The second spot on the team to Scotland went to the division winner of Boys 13 and under, Dallas Mengel, 13, of Watrous, Saskatchewan, who carded rounds of 74-76 for a 150 total. ?I knew I had won after making a 10 foot putt on 17 ? this means I go to Scotland!? said Mengel, a veteran of the MJT.

Second place in the division was taken by Sean Jedrusiak, 13, of Calgary, AB, who posted scores of 76-81 (157). Kyle Wilson, 13, of Chestermere, AB, finished in third place (84-75=159).

In the Girls division, Bari-Lynn Erais, 17, of Lethbridge, AB, played flawless golf all weekend and never gave anyone a chance to catch her after a great opening round of 75 and a final round of one-under- par (70). ?On the seventh hole today I made an eagle and knew then I had won,? she said.

Runner-up Breanne Neufeld, 15, of Coaldale, AB, played very well carding scores of 79-79 but just couldn?t catch Erais. Anisha Chong, 14, of Lethbridge, AB and Muriel McIntyre, 16, of Penticton, BC tied for third with total scores of 163.

Division winners in the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition were Sean Jedrusiak, Jimmy Cowan, 16, of Calgary, AB, Ashton Beekman, 17, of Coaldale, AB, and Muriel McIntyre, 16, of Penticton, B.C.

The Sundog Closest-to-the-Pin Competition winners were Jedrusiak, Mitchell Fox, Eric Allard, 14, of Calgary, AB, and Margaux Ullett, 19, of Calgary, AB.

The non-profit Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour is presented by Boston Pizza and is Canada?s only major junior tour run exclusively by Canadian PGA Professionals and endorsed by PGA Tour veterans Dave Barr and Ray Stewart.

The next local tournament is the MJT Hygaard Fine Foods Classic at Stony Plain Golf Club in Stony Plain, May 14-15, a double qualifier for both the 4th annual International Junior Golf Team Matches in Mexico this August and for more team spots to Scotland.
