Superb 7-Under-Par for 13-Year-Old
at Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour Stop in Calgary

CALGARY, AB ? Young Nicholas Morelli from Red Deer put together the low two rounds of his life in competitive golf this past week in the Boston Pizza-sponsored Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT) stop at McKenzie Meadows Golf Club in Calgary.

Morelli shot 68-69 for a 137 total score of seven-under-par on the Par 72 golf course to win the Boys 13 and under division and his second title on the Tour this season. Morelli eagled the final hole to beat runner-up Dallas Mengel from Watrous, Saskatchewan, by one stroke.

?It seemed everything was working,? said Morelli. ?Both scores were my low career rounds. This was my last tournament before turning 14 and I had my eye on winning it. It?s a dream come true.?

Mengel, who recently competed through the MJT in the Junior World Championships in San Diego, made a par to Morelli?s eagle to post similarly outstanding scores of 67-71=138 (six-under-par). Third place went to Chris MacDonald from Calgary (75-73=148).

The Boys 14-16 division title was captured by first-time winner Joseph Knight from Calgary with scores of 74-73 for a 147 total. ?I have been close before but this time I got it done. It feels great (to win)? said Knight. ?I drove the ball well, kept it in play and didn?t get into any trouble.?

Knight edged fellow Calgarians Jack Wesche (73-75=148) and Mike Bosch (73-76=149) who placed second and third respectively.

In the Boys 17 and up division Scott Gloge from Calgary posted back-to-back rounds of 70 for a 4-under-par total score of 140 to win the title. One stroke back was runner-up Scott Genoway from Calgary (71-70=141), followed by Brock Ott from Foremost in third place (70-75=145).

?It always feel great to win,? said Gloge. ?The other guys played well and it could have been anybody?s game out there. I stayed patient though, knowing I could make something.?

14-year-old Breanne Neufeld from Coaldale tied for first place in the Girls division with Megan Claxton from Calgary after both posted scores of 80-76=156. The winner?s trophy went to Neufeld based on her best last 9 holes on the second day.

?It is very satisfying to win,? said Neufeld. ?I have been practicing lots lately and it finally paid off. The course was in good shape and the greens were rolling true. I drove the ball well and I started putting well on the back nine holes on the last day.?

Third place went to Anisha Chong from Lethbridge who shot 83-80 for a total of 163.

Neufeld also won both the Mr. Lube Long Drive and Sundog Closest-to-the-Pin competitions at the tournament. Other division winners in these respective contests were Morelli and TJ Hicks from Calgary (Boys 13 and under), Kyle Lackie from Calgary and Andrew Funk from Edmonton (Boys 14-16), and Tyler Kemp from Lethbridge for both contests in Boys 17 and up.

The non-profit Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour, formerly the Western Canada Junior Tour, hosts tournaments for boys and girls aged 10 to 23 in four age divisions and is endorsed by PGA Tour veterans Dave Barr and Ray Stewart. It is the only major junior tour in Canada run exclusively by Canadian PGA Professionals. The next two events in Alberta are the MJT at Stony Plain Golf Club near Edmonton, August 17-18, and the Alberta PGA Junior Championship presented by Mazda at Redwood Meadows Golf Club in Calgary, August 30-September 1. Entries are still open for both events.
