Pitt Meadows, BC

PITT MEADOWS, B.C. - The Boston Pizza-sponsored Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour stopped this past weekend in Pitt Meadows for the MJT Junior at Swan-e-set Bay Resort and Country Club.

Overall the event fielded the most competitive group of players to date on the British Columbia schedule in the Boys 14-16 and Boys 17 and up divisions, with fine scores recorded by some of the talented young golfers on Swan-e-set?s long, challenging Resort Course layout.

Josh Taylor of Abbotsford claimed the Boys 17 and up division title and overall low score for the event with a one-under-par total of 70-73=143. Taylor, who also won his division at the last Maple Leaf Tour stop at Ledgeview Golf Club, in Abbotsford, maintained his winning streak by holding on to a one stroke victory over Hansol Koh of New Westminster (72-72=144).

In third place behind Koh was Nicholas Gagne of Richmond, who shot 77-71=148, and in fourth place was Brook Scott of Coquitlam (77-72=149).

Champion of the Boys 14-16 division was Darren Wallace of Langley, who was recently crowned the 2004 Future Links Prairie Champion in Manitoba. Wallace closed with an outstanding 3-under-par 69 to finish with a score of 77-69=146.

Tied for second just one stroke back of Wallace were Joon Heui Lee of Surrey (76-71) and Nick Taylor of Abbotsford (75-72), who both recorded total scores of 147. Fourth place went to Cody Kwak of Abbotsford, who shot back-to-back rounds of 76.

Washington State competitors Sean McMullen and Reid Martin gave Comox native Riley Wheeldon tough competition in the Boys 13 and under division, but Wheeldon managed to hold out and claim his second division title of the year on the Maple Leaf Junior Tour.

Wheeldon shot 80-77=157, while McMullen and Martin tied for second with rounds of 86-73=159 and 78-81=159 respectively. Fourth spot went to Brian Cho of Port Moody with 79-83=162.

In the Girls division, first round leader Christine Cho of Kent, Washington State, faced a hard charge from Surrey?s Julie Kim, who claimed eventual victory and her second Maple Leaf Tour champion?s trophy with scores of 81-73=154. Cho finished one stroke back with scores of 77-78=155.

Sue Kim (83-76=159) and Jessica Wallace (81-78=159), both of Langley, tied for third place.

Division winners of the Mr. Lube Long Drive Long Drive Competition were Conrado Paderes (Vancouver), Cody Kwak, Josh Logan (Langley) and Nari Kim (South Surrey).

Sundog Eyewear Closest-to-the-Pin Competition winners were Shayne Yoon (Vancouver), Darren Wallace, Josh Logan and Jisoo Keel (Coquitlam).

The non-profit Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour, formerly the Western Canada Junior Tour, hosts 30 tournaments across Canada for boys and girls aged 10 to 23 in four divisions. Endorsed by PGA Tour veterans Dave Barr and Ray Stewart, it is the only major junior tour in Canada run exclusively by Canadian PGA Professionals. The next local Maple Leaf Tour event is the Cattermole Timber Junior at Belmont Golf Club in Langley, June 26-27.
