MAPLE LEAF JUNIOR GOLF TOUR
QUALIFIES PLAYERS FOR EVENTS IN NEW YORK AND CALIFORNIA

Langley, B.C. ? Two Vancouver-area junior golfers will be heading to New York and California to take part in noted junior tournaments after qualifying through the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour?s Lindsay Kenney Junior at The Redwoods Golf Course.

Joon Lee of Surrey and Dong Kim of Langley both won their respective divisions at last weekend?s junior event to earn berths in the 52nd International Junior Masters, to be held June 28 - July 2 in East Aurora, N.Y., and the Future Collegians World Tour?s National Championship, to be held May 28-31 in La Quinta, CA.

The Lindsay Kenney Junior, the third in the Tour?s Spring Qualifying Series, was a qualifier for boys aged 14-17.

The 14-year-old Lee, who posted scores of 70-75 to win the Boys 14-16 division, said he found the golf course hard but beautiful. He felt the keys to his victory were ?my coach, new putter, friends and my God.?

Kim, who is 18 years old, enjoyed his home course advantage and took top honours in the Boys 17 and up division. ?I made a lot of pars and hits lots of greens,? he said, ?and when I got to the 17th hole, I knew I was going to win.?

Two strokes back of Kim was Richmond?s Nicholas Gagne, who shot 73-74, while Langley?s Danny Lee Jun (70-78) and Mission?s Jacob Hunt (74-82) placed third and fourth in this division respectively.

Placing second to Lee in the Boys 14-16 division was Langley?s Adam Cornelson, who shot 75-75, while fellow North Vancouverites Nick McKnight (79-73) and Thomas Petts (77-76) placed third and fourth respectively.

The Girls division champion was Laurenne Picard of White Rock, whose scores of 76-80 secured her first win on the Maple Leaf Junior Tour. ?I was able to recover right away from a bad shot,? said Picard. ?I only knew I had won when I looked at the scoreboard - it feels wonderful!?

Two strokes back and tied for second place were Pamela Burneski of Surrey (80-78) and Sue Kim (75-83) of Langley.

The Boys 13 and under division title went to North Vancouver?s Eugene Wong. Wong shot 74-73 and maintained his first round lead to finish five strokes ahead of runner-up Jonnie Motomochi of White Rock (79-72).
Riley Wheeldon of Comox (78-75) and Brian Cho of Port Moody (79-75) placed third and fourth in this division respectively.

Division winners in the Mr Lube Long Drive Competition were Eugene Wong, Josh Campbell (Vancouver), Sefie Nolte (White Rock) and Laurenne Picard.

The Sundog Closest-to-the-Pin Competition winners were Kyle Dodman (Abbotsford), David Duggan (North Vancouver), Iron Kim (Pitt Meadows) and Carolyn Hope (Delta).

The Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour is presented by Boston Pizza and hosts tournaments for boys and girls aged 10 to 23 in four age divisions. The non-profit Tour is endorsed by PGA Tour veterans Dave Barr and Ray Stewart and is the only major junior tour in Canada run exclusively by Golf Professionals.
