Maple Leaf Tour Qualifies Young Golfers for Junior World Championships

PITT MEADOWS, B.C. - Some of the brightest stars in junior golf were on hand to showcase their talents this past weekend at the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour?s Spring Qualifying Series event at Meadow Gardens Golf Course. The two-day tournament was a qualifier on the Boston Pizza-sponsored junior tour for both the 37th annual Callaway Golf Junior World Championships in San Diego, CA, and the Future Collegians World Tour?s National Championship at PGA West in La Quinta, CA.

Exemptions into the San Diego event were won by Jessica Wallace from Langley and Dong Su from Richmond, and an exemption into the La Quinta event went to Jonnie Motomochi from White Rock.

Jessica Wallace, who similarly qualified last year through the Maple Leaf Tour for the World Championships, shot a blistering final round 4-under-par 68 to claim the overall Girls Division title. ?It feels great to win, especially knowing I shot my career round,? said Wallace. ?My short game was solid but really shone last day.?

Caroline Kim from Port Coquitlam shot 77-76 (153) to place second amongst the Girls, with Pamela Burneski from Surrey (80-80=160) and Alyssa Human from Kamloops (81-81=162) placing third and fourth respectively.

Dong Su captured the Boys 14-16 division with back-to-back even par rounds of 72-72 (144), holding off a hard-charging Adam Hadwin from Abbotsford, who shot a final round 4-under-par 68 to close at 147. Hadwin, who was fresh off his Future Links Pacific Championship win earlier this month, finished in second place one stroke ahead of Devin Carrey from Langley (77-71=148).

Motomochi, who took top honours in the Boys 13 and under division with scores of 73-72 (145), believed his ball striking helped him win. ?I hit 28 (out of) 36 greens,? he said, ?I figured I had it after 11 (holes), because I wasn?t making any mistakes.?

Runner-up behind Motomochi was 12-year-old Reid Martin from Mulkiteo, WA, with scores of 79-72 (151). Third place went to Riley Wheeldon from Comox (79-76=155) and fourth place to Kenneth Chmela from Penticton (77-79=156).

The Boys 17 and up division was won by Greg Pool from Langley, with rounds of 75-74 (149). Runner-up was Nicholas Gagne from Richmond (80-72=152), with Jarod Golightly from Williams Lake (79-74=153) in third place, and Iron Kim from Pitt Meadows(75-80=155) in fourth.

Winners in each division of the Mr. Lube Long Drive and Sundog Closest-to-the-Pin Competitions respectively were Brian Cho and Reid Martin for Boys 13 and under; Kurt Woodman and Francco de Luca for Boys 14-16; Greg Pool and Nicholas Gagne for Boys 17 and up; Lindsay Manion and Carla Ty for Girls 15 and up; Pamela Burneski and Jessica Wallace for Girls 14 and under.

The next Maple Leaf Tour event is the Lindsay Kenney Junior at The Redwoods Golf Course in Langley, April 17-18, a qualifier for the 52nd International Junior Masters in New York, USA.

The non-profit Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour, which hosts tournaments for boys and girls aged 10 to 23 in four age divisions, is endorsed by PGA Tour veterans Dave Barr and Ray Stewart and is the only major junior tour in Canada run exclusively by Canadian PGA Professionals.
