Players battle elements at MJT Mountain View Credit Union Classic

Olds, AB – (June 11, 2012) – Rain, lightning, thunder and a tornado watch cancelled play on the first day of the June 9-10 Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s MJT Mountain View Credit Union Classic at Olds Central Highland Golf Club in Olds, however the full field of young players battled through the elements on the second day despite winds constantly blowing at 50-60 km/hr and gusting higher, and managed to finish 18 holes.

In the Boys 17-19 Division, nine holes was completed on this first day before the weather hit, and Brayden Brown, 17, of Calgary, AB, took full advantage of extremely difficult conditions to claim his division’s Gold medal. Brown stated “playing well in very tough conditions on the first day was key.” He was the only player to break par on the first nine holes, following it up with an 80 to edge Calgary’s JP Holliday, 18, by one shot (39-77). “It was so difficult today, with the winds blowing at 50-60km. We were all trying to just hold it together,” added Brown. On the final hole of the tournament, Brown lost his tee shot, went back to the tee to re-hit, and made birdie on his second ball to claim victory over Holliday. Finishing in third place was Jason Fritz, 19, of Lethbridge, AB, who shot 39-79.

The MJT Mountain View Credit Union Classic Champion in the Boys 14-16 Division was Brett Pasula, 15, of Red Deer, AB, who won with a score of 77, which tied the low round of the day. Pasula “was trying not to mess it up! I just wanted to keep it in play and hit it near the green, and I did it. This is my first win on the MJT, so it is very exciting!” Runner-up in the division was Jared Nichols, 15, of Ponoka, AB, who carded a solid 79, while third place was claimed by Calgary’s Dexter Wood, 16, who shot 80.

Landon Stellingwerff, 13, of Calgary, took home the MJT Mountain View Credit Union Classic’s Boys 13 & Under gold medal after firing a 77 to edge out Brendan Brown, 12, of Calgary. Stellingwerff “made three birdies in my round today, which was pretty good considering the conditions. It is very special to win today, with it being so tough!” Finishing third in the division was Matthew Campbell, 13, of Calgary, who carded 85.

Gina Kowalchuk, 16, of Lethbridge, played a solid round finishing with 84 to win the Girls Division title. “The course was great considering the weather, but the conditions were absolutely horrendous,” stated Kowalchuk. “It was nice to play as well as I did under these conditions.” There was a tie for second place between Kat Kennedy, 17, of Okotoks, AB, and Brianna Carrels, 16, of Lethbridge, who finished two back with identical scores of 86.

The Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition divisional winners were Michael Hoang of Calgary, Brett Pasula, Nolan Broeke of Calgary, and Kat Kennedy. Sundog Closest-to-the-Pin Competitions were won by Brayden Provost of Brocket, Liam Croome of Calgary, Ryan Hounjet of Calgary, and Jun Park of Edmonton.
