Jones fires 68 to finish MJT season in style at BraeBen

For Immediate Release – Mississauga, ON – (October 24, 2011) –
Very cold and cloudy weather heralded the end of the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s season this past Saturday, October 22, where competitive junior golfers battled it out one last time on the wet BraeBen Golf Course in Mississauga, Ontario.

Some very good scoring was headlined by a four-under-par 68 from 16-year-old Keaton Jones of Kitchener, who placed low overall and racked up his fourth MJT Boys 14-16 division title for 2011 in style. “Consistent play with no mistakes did it. It is satisfying to finish the MJT season with a win,” he said, adding that he is looking forward to the MJT Boston Pizza National Championship in Florida next month. Second place in this division went to John Boncoddo, 15, of Brantford, who shot 75. There was a tie for third place at 77 between Trevor Ranton, 14, of Waterloo, and Chris Wilson, 16, of Toronto.

Matthew Chiasson, 17, of Cambridge, ended his 2011 MJT season like he started it back in May - with first place victory in the Boys 17-19 division, notching up his fourth title as well with his even-par round of 72, and commenting, “It feels great to win in such tough conditions!” Adam Taylor, 17, of Port Robinson, and Kody Fry, 17, of Grand Valley, both fired 77 to tie for second place in the division.

It took a playoff to decide the Girls division winner, after a three-way tie for first place at 83 between Madison Easterbrook, 15, of Burlington, Lorelle Weavers, 17, also of Burlington, and Michelle Ruiz, 16, of Mississauga. Easterbrook won on the first playoff hole, citing her long game as the key and that she was ‘very happy to finish the year with a win.’ Off-season plans include ‘daily training, Florida with the MJT, Puerto Rico with Team Ontario and lessons with Carrie Vaughan.’

In the Boys 13 and under division, Derek Mubarak, 13, of Orangeville, shot 83 to edge both Mark Wodz, 13, of Toronto, and Max Clift, 13, of Kitchener, for the victory. “(The win feels) great because I accomplished my goal of winning a tournament,” said Mubarak, who intends to ‘spend some time working on my game in the simulators to be fresh for the start next year.’

In the Mr. Lube Long Drive contest, winners for each division were Max Clift, Chris Wilson, Ben Finlayson of Kitchener and Lorelle Weavers, while the Sundog Eyewear Closest to the Pin division winners were Malcolm McDougall of Oakville, John Boncoddo of Brantford, Wesley Kwok of Markham and Dylaney Day of Toronto.

Mike Skimson, PGA of Canada Professional and MJT Tournament Director, said, “Almost everyone stayed after to take part in the prize presentation, a nice way to finish up 2011.” Players who qualified all season long will next compete in the invitation-only MJT Boston Pizza National Tour Championship presented by Callaway at ChampionsGate Golf Club, Orlando, Florida, November 18-20.
