Vancouver Island juniors low overall at MJT’s University stop

A couple of young golfers from Vancouver Island made the trip over to the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s MJT British Columbia Fall One-Day Series at University Golf Club in Vancouver worthwhile on Saturday, winning both the Boys 14-16 and 17-19 divisions.

Andrew Allan, 19, of Nanaimo, who plays out of Crown Isle Golf Club in Comox, shot 74 to win low overall and the Boys 17-19 title by one stroke over Ryan August, 18, of Surrey and Surrey Golf Club (75). “I drove the ball well and hit lots of greens,” said Allan. “It feels great (to win). I want to play lots of golf in the off-season and see how good I can get for next year.” Third place went to Steven Diack, 19, of Coquitlam and Swan-e-set Bay Resort, who shot 77.

Victoria’s Dylan Bell, 16, a junior member at Royal Colwood Golf Club, shot 75 to win the Boys 14-16 title in his very first MJT outing. “I have never really won anything before so it feels great,” he said. “I putted well and made a lot of 10 and 15 footers for par. I played the par fives well today at two-under – my golf course only has two par fives so it’s kind of a treat to get a crack at four par fives for once.” Bell added that he intends to ‘grind practicing in the rain as much as he can’ this off-season. Teagan Casper, 15, of North Vancouver and Seymour Golf Club, came second in the division with a 79, and third place went to Patrick Tan, 14, of Vancouver (80).

Veteran on the MJT Boys 13 and under division podium is Jae Wook Lee, 12, of Langley and Redwoods Golf Club, who carded 77 to win by two strokes over joint runners-up Edward Chen, 13, of Burnaby, and Owen Xiong, 13, of West Vancouver. “I feel really proud and it feels really good (to win),” said Lee, of his fourth title this season.

14-year-old Michelle Kim of Surrey shot 78 to win the Girls division title, and commented, “I feel very satisfied because once again I achieved my goal.” Regarding her key to victory, “I didn’t lose patience and I was pretty consistent out there. I hit most of the fairways and made a long putt that I did not expect.” Second place went to Julie Lym, 16, of Vancouver and Redwoods Golf Club (84), while Breanna Croxen, 15, of New Westminster and Quilchena Golf Club, shot 92 to place third.

Lym also took home both the Girls division Mr. Lube Long Drive and Sundog Closest-to-the-Pin prizes, which were won in the other divisions by Edward Chen (Burnaby) and James Chang (Richmond), Victor Baptiste (Oliver) and Ben McNiven (Merritt), Andrew Allan and Paul Bordignon (Burnaby), respectively.

This tournament marks the end of the MJT 2011 season in BC; qualified players will compete next in the invitation-only MJT Boston Pizza National Tour Championship presented by Callaway at ChampionsGate Golf Club, Orlando, Florida, November 18-20.
