Douse and Fry Tie for Low Overall on MJT at Foxwood

For Immediate Release – Baden, ON – (September 12, 2011) –
The first in the four-event MJT Ontario Fall One Day Series on the Boston Pizza-presented Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT) was held Saturday, September 10, at Foxwood Golf Club in Baden, where junior golfers enjoyed beautiful, sunny weather.

The low overall scorers were Tyler Douse and Kody Fry, who both shot 75 and won their respective age divisions of Boys 14-16 and 17-19. Douse, 14, of Waterloo, cited consistent driving and his approach shots into the greens as keys to his two stroke victory over Jonathon Collins, 16, of Fergus. “It feels great to win today as I felt very good about my ball striking,” said Douse, whose tournament highlight was his bunker shot on the 11th hole that just ‘sat on the edge.’ Collins took second place in the division with his 77, and there was a tie for third place at 79 between Joel Albany, 15, of Georgetown, and Wesley Day, 15, of Ajax.

MJT veteran, Kody Fry, 17, of Grand Valley, edged Ryan Dyck, 17, of Welland, by one shot in the Boys 17-19 division, and believed that staying patient and planning his next shot was the reason. “My short game was great today, helping me save pars,” said Fry, who racks up his second victory in as many outings on the MJT this season. “It feels great to get another win.” Third place in the division went to another Welland player, 17-year-old Zachary Hallborg, who shot 77.

There was a tie for first place in the Boys 13 and under division after both Anthony Occhiuto and Shane Vollmer shot 81, forcing a playoff which Occhiuto, 12, of Guelph, won on the first hole. “It is very exciting to get my first MJT victory in a playoff,” he said, citing his positive attitude as the key. Vollmer, 13, of Ripley, playing in his very first MJT event, took home second place prizing, and Trevor Webb, 13, of Cambridge, placed third (83).

Michelle Riuz, 17, of Mississauga, won the Girls division title by one stroke after firing 80 on the challenging Foxwood course, and stated, “My iron play today was fantastic! My birdie on number 11 was a highlight, and it feels great to see some pay off for the hard work over the past few months.” Second place went to Lorelle Weavers, 17, of Burlington, who shot 81, and third place to Kirsten Degutis, 18, of Waterloo, who carded 85.

In the Mr. Lube Long Drive contest, winners for each division were Ryan Grizzie of Niagara Falls, Quinton Iannantuono of Fonthill, Brodie Davis of Ancaster, and Katelyn McMahon of Brampton. The Sundog Eyewear Closest to the Pin division winners were Shane Vollmer, Charles Corner of Cayuga, Kody Fry and Lorelle Weavers. The Golf Town Comeback division awards for best improvement on the back nine went to Addison Davis of Ancaster (16 shots), Webster Steele of Waterloo (7 shots), Ryan Dyck (4 shots) and Michelle Riuz (8 shots).

The next stop on the MJT Ontario Fall One-Day series is September 24 at Guelph Lakes Golf Club in Guelph, followed by events at Cambridge Golf Club in Cambridge on October 8 and BraeBen Golf Club in Mississauga on October 22. For full details, please visit www.maplejt.com or call 1-877-859-4653.
