Juniors battle storms at MJT’s Osprey Valley stop

For Immediate Release - Alton, ON – (August 22, 2011) –
It’s Mother Nature versus the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour in Ontario, where a second consecutive tournament had severe thunderstorms wash out the second round of play. Last week at Whistle Bear Golf Club in Cambridge, play was suspended during the final nine holes of competition, and this week, at the Osprey Valley Golf Resort in Alton, only the Boys 13 and Under and the Girls divisions managed to complete 27 holes.

In the Girls Division, a tie for the overnight lead at 78 between Orangeville’s Alexis Hawerchuk and Oakville’s Alanna Haynes would be decided after their front nine on day two. Hawerchuk, 19, fired (78-37=115) to finish three strokes better than Haynes, 17, who shot (78+40=118), and described her victory as “self-proving.” When asked about her play, Hawerchuk commented that her tournament highlight was “sinking a 40-footer for birdie after a string of bogeys” and that “solid approach shots, committing to shot selection and not playing scared” were her keys to the Girls title. Lorelle Weavers, 17, of Burlington, carded 79+39=118 to finish tied with Haynes for second place.

The Boy’s 13 and Under division saw 13 year old, Kyle Gorospe, of Mississauga, collect another victory with his fine scores of 73+36=109, totalling four MJT titles this season. “It feels great winning my fourth one this year over a strong field. I credit my consistent driving and iron play, as well as a chip-in on seven,” he commented. Tyler Nagano, 12, of Toronto, would finish four strokes back in second place (76+37=113) while third place was collected by Kitchener’s Max Clift, 13, after he carded 78+38=116.

With his two under par 70, Jordan Gregoris, 18, of Aurora, was the only player to break par during the tough competition, and his strong opening round would ultimately earn him the Boys 17-19 title as electrical storms suspended play nearly all day Sunday. “I played safe and closed with a birdie on 18 from 25 feet,” said Gregoris. “The win feels a little different, because it was my first time.” There was a tie for second place at two over par 74 between Luke Atack of Hamilton and Brett Geiser of Markham, both aged 17.

The Boy’s 14-16 Division was won by first round leader Trevor Ranton, 14, of Waterloo, who would win by one with a 76. “It’s my first year in this division and it feels good to win,” he stated. “I made a 30-footer for birdie to win but staying out of the rough by hitting a lot of fairways was definitely my key.” Second place was a tie at 77 between Raphael Berard, 16, of Toronto, and Joel Albany, 15, of Georgetown.

In the Mr. Lube Long Drive contest, winners for each division were Kyle Fancy of Hillsburgh, Joel Albany, Brent Gay of Burlington and Alexis Hawerchuk. For the Sundog Eyewear Closest to the Pin, division winners were Dennie Weber of Ancaster, Patrick McCann of Tecumseh, Jonathan Lam of Markham and Alanna Haynes. The Golf Town Comeback Awards went to Tyler Nagano of Toronto, Kevin J. Ho of Richmond Hill, Mark Horner of Toronto and Jennifer Yoon of Oakville.
