Williams Continues Winning Ways on MJT at Carnmoney

Calgary, AB – (August 17, 2011) -
The Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s (MJT) recent stop on August 15th and 16th at Carnmoney Golf Club in Calgary, Alberta, was challenged by intermittent delays for gusting wind, driving rain, and nearby lightning. Despite the inclement weather, junior’s spirits were not dampened and Carnomney GC, host of the Alberta Open, was a true championship test in great shape that produced great champions in each of the four age divisions. Matt Williams, 15, of Calgary, fired rounds of (71+67=138) (-6) to claim the Overall Title, the Boys 14-16 Division title and to secure the exemption into the Golfweek Championship at McCormick Ranch in Scottsdale, Arizona this December. Williams “played here because of the quality of the golf course (Carnmoney) and the exemption available. I really wanted to go to Arizona this December – love to get out of Calgary in the winter and play golf!” On his way to a final round 67, Williams had eight birdies on the card, which he credited to “putting really, really well. I was excited that I also played well coming down the stretch, making three birdies on the last four holes. It was very nice to finish so strongly!” Finishing in second behind Williams was MJT new-comer Travis Chorley, 16, of Jasper, who carded impressive rounds of (75+71=146) while Derek Roach, 16, of Calgary, fired (77+72=149) to claim third place honours.

In the Boys 17-19 Division, Jesse Teron won his second MJT event of 2011 recording back-to-back rounds of 71 to claim top honours (71+71=142) (-2). Teron noted “I was two over through eight holes, and battled back. Both Rylan and Travis were under par; I stayed patient and hit good, solid shots to finish. It was nice to battle back and post a good score after a tough start!” Asked what has been the difference since the beginning of 2011, Teron stated that he “is more confident, committed to his routine, and has become more patient on the course” all of which has resulted in lower scores. Finishing in second place was Aaron Crawford, 17, of Calgary, who finished at (74+73=147) while Lethbridge native Rylan Visser finished at (73+76=149) finishing in third place all alone.

Gina Kowalchuk, 15, of Lethbridge claimed the Gold Medal in the Girls Division, recording rounds of (85+87=172) to edge out Megan Vermillion, 19, of Fort McMurray, by two shots (88+86=174). Kowalchuk just tried to “keep it out of the long grass and hit good shots. I am getting more confident with my clubs; I just need to hit smarter shots.” Rounding out the top three was Rachel Clark, 16, of Edmonton, who claimed the Bronze Medal (140+123=263).

Notching another win, his seventh of the season, Brendan Brown, 12, of Calgary, fired an impressive final round of 74 to distance himself from the field (86+74=160). With all of his wins this year on the MJT Alberta schedule, one would think that it gets old for him; however, that is clearly not the case. “I am very excited to win; I am always excited to win! My chipping has improved this year and I am making more 5 foot putts, I think these are the differences” said Brown. Finishing in second place was Michael Valk, 12, of Medicine Hat, who fired rounds of (91+79=170) to finish ahead of Ethan Rimmer, 13, of Fort McMurray, who was solid in his third place finish (94+85=179).

The divisional winners in the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition included: Andrew Rados (Chestermere, AB), Jesse Teron (Red Deer, AB) and Gina Kowalchuk (Lethbridge, AB). The Sundog Skills competition divisional winners were: Brendan Brown (Calgary, AB), Trent Ducharme (Fort MacLeod, AB), Jordan Taylor (High River, AB), and Gina Kowalchuk (Lethbridge, AB). The Golf Town Comeback Awards went to: Brendan Brown (Calgary, AB), Wyatt Smith (Calgary, AB), Jordan Taylor (High River, AB), and Rachel Clark (Edmonton, AB).

The Boston Pizza-presented Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour concludes its Alberta schedule on August 27-28 with the MJT Chinook Credit Union Series at The Bridges at Claresholm Golf Club.
