PLAYOFF AND GREAT FIELD FOR GIRLS DIVISION HIGHLIGHT MJT’S GREY SILO STOP

For Immediate Release - Waterloo, ON – (July 26, 2010) –
Players on the Boston Pizza-presented Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT) battled the links that wind around the Grand River at Grey Silo Golf Club in Waterloo this past weekend, vying for division titles in sunny, hot and humid conditions, with the course playing firm and fast.

A great field size of 18 girls competed in the tournament, with the division title going to Meghan Bennett, 16, of Pickering, ON, after she fired rounds of 72-79 (151) to win by five strokes over Madison Easterbrook, 15, of Burlington, ON (78-78=156). “Everything came together in my game. It was a lot of fun and I was relaxed but still with focus and determination to do well,” said Bennett. “My career low round of 72 and back nine of 33 on day one where highlights. I feel (this win) is a big honour as the girls field was very large and strong with many good players.” Third place went to Kirsten Degutis, 17, of Waterloo, ON, who carded back-to-back rounds of 83 for a 166 total.

There was a tie for first place in the Boys 17-19 division at 144 total score between Truman Tai, 17, of Markham, ON, (70-74) and Andrew Moffat, 17, of Brantford, ON (71-73), which was settled in a playoff won by Tai on the 5th hole. Tai, who wins a paid entry into the Winter Golf School in Florida, said, “I feel like I made a lot of clutch putts coming down the stretch. I capped off a tough day with an eagle on the 5th playoff hole which was my tournament highlight. This is a great course and the tournaments are well run, and this feels great going into the Canadian Juniors with a hard fought playoff victory.” In the division, Colin McCoy, 17, of Tilsonburg, ON, fired 71-76 (147) to place third.

Boys 14-16 division champion, shooting 72-76 (148), was Keaton Jones, 15, of Kitchener, ON, who followed up on his recent victory in the Penn State University event on the prestigious PGA Junior Series this July after qualifying via the MJT Ontario Series at Paris Grand Golf Club in Paris, ON. (Jones shot rounds of 67-74-70 (-5) at this event to win their Boys 13-15 Division by six shots and earn a spot in the 36th Junior PGA Championship in Fort Wayne, Indiana, this August.) “Finishing the last two holes one under to win by one stroke was a highlight. This is a fantastic tour close to home with great competition and it feels great to win my second title of the year,” said Jones. Just one stroke back was runner-up Joel Albany, 15, of Georgetown, ON, who carded his best rounds on the tour this season of 75-74 (149). There was a three-way tie for third place at 154 total score between Nicklaus Kennedy, 16, of London, ON (77-77), Trevor Ranton, 14, of Waterloo, ON (74-80), and Brodie McKinney, 16, of Stoney Creek, ON (73-81).

Max Clift, 13, of Kitchener, edged Scott Herod, 13, of Cambridge, ON, to scoop his third MJT Boys 13 and under title this season. Clift shot 73-71 (144) to Herod’s 75-70 (145). “It feels great to win another event with the Ontario Bantam coming up this week,” said Clift. Kyle Gorospe, 13, of Mississauga, ON, carded 75-77 (152) to place third.

The divisional winners in the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition were Scott Herod, Nicklaus Kennedy, Ryan Amos of Komoka, ON, and Annika Haynes of Oakville, ON. The Sundog Skills competition divisional winners were Cooper Elliott of Carlisle, ON, Nicklaus Kennedy, Tyson Soers of Mildmay, ON, and Alli Gallagher of Hamilton, ON.. Golf Town Comeback Awards were presented to Scott Herod, Matthew Didiano of Mississauga, Brett Kudoba of Kitchener, and Alexandra Garcia of Kitchener.
