DeGrazia from Thunder Bay strikes again at MJT’s Carman stop

For Immediate Release - Carman, MB. – (July 8, 2011) –
A mix of Ontario and Manitoba junior golfers took to the links on July 6th and 7th at the Carman Golf Club in Carman for the third event in the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s Manitoba Series, where Evan DeGrazia of Thunder Bay, Ontario, was the low finisher in the two-day tournament.

DeGrazia, 16, fired 74+73=147 to strike victory again after his win back in April at the MJT’s East St. Paul stop, taking home low overall honours out of all four divisions plus his title in the Boy’s 14-16 year old division. As the ‘Road to College Golf’, every MJT event features an international qualifier and with this win DeGrazia earns himself entry into the Texas Junior Golf Tour’s Holiday Classic at Barton Creek Resort in Austin, Texas – an event attended by many college coaches which should provide him with excellent scouting exposure.

Rounding out the Boys 16-16 division was Travis Fredborg, 15, of Selkirk, MB, who finished second (81+76=157) and in third place only one shot behind that was Stacy Genaille, 14, of Pelican Rapids, MB, (82+76=158).

The Boy’s 17-19 year old division needed a playoff to decide the winner and it was Winnipeg’s Bret Thompson, 17, who emerged victorious over East St. Paul’s Dominic Payne, 18. Thompson, who won the MJT’s Winkler stop in June, has now gone back to back on the MJT. Thompson and Payne shot scores of 78+73=151 and 76+75=151 respectively, three strokes better than those tied for third place at 154. Retrogression was used to break the three-way tie and award the bronze medal and prizes to Jay Stafford, 18, of Stonewall, MB, who played steady golf with a pair of 77’s.

The youngest players in the field also faced a tight race with eventual winner, Brendan Kesterke, winning the Boys 13 and Under title by only one stroke over two others who tied for second. Kesterke, who shot 74=82=156, is from Headingley, MB, and at only 11 years old has already claimed his second win on the MJT this year after also taking the season opener in East St. Paul. The second place tie was between two Winnipeg boys and was broken by retrogression awarding the silver medal to 13 year old Rayan Soni (79+78=157) for his second runner-up finish of the season. Sam Diamond, 12, who has

already recorded a second and a third place finish on the MJT this season, would have to settle for another top three with his bronze medal (75+82=157).

In the Girls division, Camryn Roadley, 12, of Winnipeg, won by four strokes over Brynn Todd, 13, also of Winnipeg. Roadley (92+102=194) also won the Mr. Lube Long Drive while Todd (103+95=198) won the Sundog Eyewear Skills competition and, for her second day improvement, the Golf Town Comeback Award.

The other Mr. Lube Long Drive division winners were Stefan Lavallee (Quarry Oaks Golf Club), Landon Kopp (Lorette Golf Club) and Caleb Dillingham (Scotswood Links), while the other Sundog Skills Competition winners were Joshua Martineau (Elmhurst Golf Club), Steve Young (St. Charles Golf Club) and Regan Klassen (Winkler Golf Club). The Golf Town Comeback awards also went to Sean Gula (Red Lake Golf Club), Joel Baron (Sandhills Golf Club) and Mike Hetherington (Carman Golf Club).

The Boston Pizza-presented Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour continues its Manitoba schedule in Teulon on July 28th and 29th - a qualifier for the Future Collegiate World Tour’s Notre Dame University Championship. Players can register online at www.maplejt.com or call 1-877-859-4653.
