CREIGHTON WINS BY 11 STROKES ON MJT AT PENN HILLS

Shubenacadie, NS – (September 1, 2010) –
Myles Creighton, of Digby, NS, and Digby Pines Golf Club, who is just 14 years old, continued his winning ways on the Boston Pizza-presented Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT) and fired solid rounds of 74-73 (147) to claim the Boys 14-16 division title by a record 11 strokes in the MJT’s CPGA-Atlantic Junior Championship at the Links at Penn Hills in Shubenacadie on August 30th and 31st.

In very hot weather with high humidity, Creighton was clearly the key competitor to beat on the challenging Penn Hills layout even when taking the different yardages played by the three age groups into account. “The course was in good condition and I hit the ball well,” he said. “My tournament highlight was hitting 16 greens in regulation the first day. I feel pretty happy (about winning).” There was a tie for second place in Boys 14-16 at 158 total score between Alex Feltmate, 16, of Fletcher’s Lake, NS, (75-83) and Daniel Keays, 15, of Bedford, NS, (79-79). Feltmate won the division’s Mr. Lube Long Drive competition, while Brad Curren, 16, of Hammonds Plains, NS, won the Sundog Closest-to-the-Pin.

The Boys 13 and under division champion was Bobby Dunphy, 13, of Antigonish, NS, who carded solid scores of 76-79 (155) off the green tees. “My eagle on hole number three was my highlight,” he said. “I feel excited and happy to win.” Runner-up was Luke Green, 12, of Bedford, who shot 79-82 (161). Third place went to Samuel Pelletier, 12, of St-Jacques, NB, who finished 83-84 (167). Dunphy won the Closest-to-the-Pin prize and Green, the Long Drive.

The Boys 17-19 title had to be decided in a playoff between Andrew Reid, 17, of Cole Harbour, NS, (74-83), and Jose Pauig, 17, of Bedford (78-79), after both players tied for the lead at 157 total score. Reid, who also claimed the division’s Long Drive prize, won on the first playoff hole and said that winning the playoff to qualify for Arizona was his tournament highlight. “I would have liked to win while playing well but a win is a win and I’m happy with it.” Evan Cosgrove, 17, of Saint John, NB, took third place after firing 82-79 (161), and added the Closest-to-the-Pin prize to his takings.

Golf Town Comeback Awards went to Scott Mazerolle, 18, of Halifax, Tyler Brown, 14, of Halifax, and Jarred Lowe, 13, of Digby. Many draw prizes were also awarded, including a Cleveland CG15 wedge which was won by a delighted Matt Green, 12, of Bedford.

In addition to medals and prizes, the winners of each age division received paid exemptions into the MJT Boston Pizza National Championship presented by Callaway at Wigwam Golf Resort in Phoenix, AZ, November 19-21. For more information, please visit www.maplejt.com or call 1-877-859-4653.
