FIRST TIMERS DOMINATE MJT SEASON OPENER IN ONTARIO; FOUR WIN INTERNATIONAL EXEMPTIONS

PETERSBURG, ON – (May 10, 2010) – Torrential rains and high winds at Rebel Creek Golf Course in Petersburg over mother’s day weekend forced the Ontario season-opener on the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT) to be shortened to 18 holes, which played out May 9th in cold, windy weather. The packed field of junior golfers competed for division titles and spots in the following international tournaments: the 58th East Aurora International Junior Masters (EAIJM) in New York State, USA; the Future Collegiate World Tour (FCWT) National Championship in Florida, USA; and the Faldo Series U.K. Championship at Trentham in England.

MJT newcomer, Jamie Cherutti, 16, of Aurora, ON, battled it out to win the Boys 14-16 division by two strokes with his score of 75, earning the EAIJM exemption. “The conditions were good but the wind made it tough,” he said after his victory. “My coach recommended this tour and I feel really good to win an event early in the season.” Based on retrogression (best last nine holes), Louis Tomlinson, 16, of Lake Mary, Florida, USA, received one of the two spots in the Faldo Series U.K. Championship at Trentham after shooting 77 to tie for second place in the division with Matt Gerber, 15, of Kitchener, ON.

Another newcomer to the MJT, Michael Jiggins, 19, of Cambridge, ON, won the Boys 17-19 division by three strokes after firing 75, claiming the first of two spots into the Faldo Series U.K. Championship at Trentham, England. “I was very fortunate to hit the ball as well as I did in the wind; the conditions were very difficult but the course was in great shape for this time of year,” he said. “My goal is to win the next event.” MJT veteran, Sterling Emery, 19, of Orangeville, ON, carded 78 to finish second. There was a tie for third between Derek Mathes, 17, of Kitchener, and Jackson Taylor, 17, of Waterloo, ON, who both shot 79.

Craig Stefureak, 13, of Caledonia, ON, won his first MJT outing with a fine score of 83 in the Boys 13 and under division, beating out the runners-up by four strokes. “I found it really windy and tough conditions but the course is very nice,” said Stefureak. “My goal this season is to win the overall MJT championship.” Tyler Douse, 13, of Waterloo, and Joey Hetherman, 13, of Burlington, ON, both shot 87 to tie for second place.

The spot in the FCWT National Championship in Florida was won by Girls division champion, Madison Easterbrook , 14, of Burlington. “I feel great,” she said about her win. “My goal this season is to keep my scores consistently under 80.” Sarah Dunning, 15, of Kitchener, took second place among the Girls after carding 91, while Monica Gabriele, 14, of Mississauga, ON, placed third (92).

Madison Easterbrook also won her division’s Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition, while the boys’ division winners were Tommy Miller, 13, of London, ON, Kody Fry, 15, of Grand Valley, ON, and Declan Kaster, 18, of Ayr, ON. The Sundog Skills competition divisional winners were Craig Stefureak, Jonathan Snook, 16, of Niagara-on-the-Lake, ON, Brett Kennedy, 17, of Kitchener, and Maddy Piccininni, 15, of Toronto, ON.

The MJT continues to roll out its 16-event Ontario schedule in two weeks time on May 22nd and 23rd with the Quagmire Golf Classic at Mystic Golf Club in Ancaster, a qualifier for an Open Invite to a FCWT event as well as spots into the Pepsi Little People’s Golf Championship in lllinois.
