MENGEL CAPS 10 YEARS ON MJT WITH MJT-CPGA OF SASKATCHEWAN JUNIOR CHAMPION TITLE
Porter qualifies for Arizona

Saskatoon, SK - (July 14, 2010) –
An extremely windy, wet and cold day greeted players in the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s (MJT) CPGA of Saskatchewan Junior Championship at the Willows Golf Club in Saskatoon on July 13th, weather which was described by MJT Tournament Director and CPGA Professional, Jeff Chambers, as “nothing short of miserable. To see our first-round leaders Dallas Mengel and Mike Boymook shoot one-under-par in those conditions was nothing short of amazing. The golf course is, however, in perfect shape as the Willows is gearing up for the Amateur next week so the rough is tough and the greens are fast. A real treat to play with the exception of the weather.”

Slightly better weather followed on July 14th, and some good scores were recorded by the competitive young golfers from BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba during the final round of the last MJT stop here this season, who were vying for division titles plus a qualifying spot in the CAN-USA Team Matches at Ritz-Carlton at Dove Mountain Golf Club in Marana, Arizona, December 10-12, 2010. The MJT contingent to Arizona is sponsored by Travel Underwriters, the Official International Events Partner.

“Players that played well on the back nine managed to climb up the rankings as the back nine played tough,” outlined Chambers. Dallas Mengel, 18, of Saskatoon and Riverside Golf and Country Club, who has been playing on the MJT since the age of eight, pulled though with an impressive one-under score again on day two, to finish two-under for the event, capping his 10-year stint on the program with the MJT-CPGA of Saskatchewan Boys 17-19 Champion title. Runner-up in his division was fellow Riverside member, Johann Kriegler, 19, also of Saskatoon, who fired 74-71 (145) to finish three strokes back of Mengel, and two strokes ahead of third place finisher, Jordan Johns, 19, of Fort Qu’Appelle and Echo Ridge Golf Club (77-70=147). Boymook, 18, of Saskatoon, dropped to tie-8th after his closing round of 79.

Chase Porter, 16, of Saskatoon, is the eligible qualifier for the team spot in the CAN-USA Team Matches in Arizona after he took an impressive victory on his home course by shooting solid rounds of 75-72 (147) to become MJT-CPGA of Saskatchewan Boys 14-16 Champion, his first MJT title, beating MJT newcomer, Jackson Hill, 14, of Humboldt and Humboldt Golf Club (78-72=150) by three strokes. Four-year MJT member, Zach Taylor, 15, of Saskatoon and Riverside Golf Club, was edged by one to settle for third place in the division with scores of 77-74 (151).

Making a big trip from Courtney, British Columbia, was Logan Yanick, 13, a Crown Isle Golf Resort junior member, who bounced back with a very solid 75 on day two to sneak by the leaders and win the MJT-CPGA of Saskatchewan Boys 13 and Under title by three strokes. On day one, Cory Sawchuk, 13, from Prince Albert and Cooke Municipal Golf Course, scored his tournament record round of a very impressive 74 to take the lead by two over Nathan Corrin, 13, of Moose Jaw in this division. Yanick came from behind, however, to claim victory, while Corrin (76-80) and Sawchuk (74-82) tied for second place at 156 total score.

In the Girls division, Sawchuk’s sister, Kayla, only 11 years old, posted great scores of 89-97 to beat MJT newcomer Madison Hiltz, 15, of Coronach (112-118), to win the title.

Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition awards were presented to Yanick, Justin Paradis, 16, of Prince Albert, and Mengel. The Sundog Skills competition divisional winners were Brooks Miller, 12, of Fox Creek, Alberta, Luc Pauli, 16, of Prince Albert, Boymook and Kayla Sawchuk. Highlighted for the Golf Town ‘Comeback Awards’ were Kade Johnson, 11, of Yorkton, Anthony Neufeld, 14, of Riverside Estates, and Zac Nichol, 19, of Regina.

With the Saskatchewan season at an end players will now wait for notice on qualification for the MJT Boston Pizza National Championship presented by Callaway at the Wigwam Golf Resort and Spa in Phoenix, AZ, November 19-21. For more information, please visit www.maplejt.com or call 1-877-859-4653.
