SCRYMGEOUR CROWNED MJT-PGA OF ALBERTA JUNIOR CHAMPION WITH
9-UNDER-PAR VICTORY

CALGARY, A.B. – (August 6, 2010) –
The MJT-PGA of Alberta Junior Championship, a major event on the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT) which is endorsed by the Professional Golfers’ Association of Alberta (PGA of AB), played out Tuesday through Thursday, August 3rd to 5th, on McKenzie Meadows Golf Course in Calgary, Alberta. The 54-hole tournament is part of a series of national events pioneered by the MJT in conjunction with the provincial PGA zones. A field of 80 top junior golfers from British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Alberta, Tennessee and the United Arab Emirates teed off on the superbly manicured McKenzie Meadows Course and were treated to ideal weather conditions for their three day competition.

A brilliant three day total of nine-under par by Cochrane’s Nick Scrymgeour, 15, won him the Overall Champion title and Championship Flag in the Boys 14-16 Division, as well as a Cleveland Wedge and a $50 Gift Certificate at Boston Pizza. Scrymgeour attributed his incredible performance to his solid putting, where he “putted so well. I was dropping bombs from everywhere! As the wind picked up, I just hit solid shots and made pars.” Scrymgeour won his division by 11 shots, carding rounds of 70-67-70 (207). Tied at a total score of 218 behind Scrymgeour were Kieran Standen, 16, of Edmonton (77-71-70), and Travis Miller, 16, of Calgary (74-71-73). Standen claimed the Runner-up Flag and a White Ice Odyssey Putter via retrogression over Miller, who took home the Third Place Flag, an OGIO backpack and an MJT Canterbury Golf Belt for his efforts.

In the Boys 17 – 19 Division, long time MJT member Connor O’Reilly, 18, of Edmonton, claimed the Champions Flag with great rounds of 70-68-76 (214) to edge out Kevin Piper, 18, of St. Albert, by one shot. Piper tied the low round of the tournament on day two, firing 67 in ideal scoring conditions to get back into contention after an opening round of 75. Finishing in third place was Corbin Adams of Edmonton who finished one back of Piper.
In the Girls Division, Mieke Heyns, 17, of Lethbridge, claimed top honours with three solid rounds 79-82-80 to win by four shots over Kat Kennedy, 15, of Okotoks. Heyns played very well over the three days, but “never really got the putter going again.” In third place was Mandy Wong, 18, of Calgary, who carded solid rounds of 85-79-82.

In the Boys 13 and Under Division, Logan Yanick, 13, of Courtenay, BC, played flawless golf en-route to a 10 shot lead. Yanick played “very solid, and never really got into trouble. I hit some great shots, and managed the course well.” In second place, closing with a round of one-under Par 71, was Brett Pasula, 13, of Red Deer who played very well over the three days, but had lost ground over the first two days to Yanick. Noah Vongphit, 12, of Collierville, Tennessee, USA, closed with a final round 76 to jump up the standings, vaulting into third place.

The divisional winners in the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition were Ethan Leier of Calgary, Doug Skulsky of Calgary, Corbin Adams, and Mandy Wong of Calgary. The Sundog Skills competition divisional winners were Nolan Bruin of Red Deer, Connor Kitchen of Calgary, Jordan Gibson of Picture Butte and Mandy Wong. Golf Town Comeback awards were presented to Jon Apolonia of Calgary, Zach Taylor of Saskatoon, SK, Thomas Spencer of Grande Prairie and Arielle Valencia of Calgary.

The winner of the Callaway Diablo Edge Driver, a major draw prize for everyone in the field, was won by Andrew Chelack of Calgary.
