THIELS SAVES HIS BEST FOR LAST AT NANTON
Nanton, AB - (September 14, 2009) – The final tournament in the province for the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT) played out on Nanton Golf Club in Nanton this past Sunday, September 13, and ending the season on a high note was four-year MJT veteran Jason Thiels, of Olds, who won his first MJT title and low overall score.
The tournament was the second of two one-day tournaments in the province sponsored by Macleod Savings and Credit Union. Thiels, 18, fired 72 to edge both Matthew Whittaker, 18, of Lethbridge, and Taylor Drolet, 17, of Calgary, by just one stroke, winning the Boys 17-19 division. “I putted great, although the greens were very difficult to read, and undulating,” said Thiels. “It is very exciting, finishing this way. I haven’t played really well this year, and today just played solid, nothing fancy. But it is nice to post a good score for the year end event. Thanks to Macleod Savings for putting this one on!”
Showing great improvement in only his second MJT outing was 14-year-old Andrew Rados, of Chestermere, who shot 75 to win the Boys 14-16 title by four strokes over both Rick Gundlock, 15, of Crossfield, and Hayden Holick, 16, of High River.
In the Boys 13 and under division, winner Patrick Murphy, 12, of Crossfield, continued his excellent play on the MJT with an impressive round of 74. “I played okay today, I just never got the ball in the hole soon enough,” he commented. “It was great to win, it has been a great year on the MJT.” In second place was Theoren Olver, 13, of Three Hills, who carded 80, while Ryan Rody, 12, of Calgary, finished in third place after firing 83.
