Petersburg, ON - (May 25, 2009) – Players competing for exemption into the Kingdom of Fife Matches in St. Andrews, Scotland, UK, at this past weekend’s Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT) event, were neck-and-neck over two days at the picturesque Rebel Creek Golf Club in Petersburg, Ontario.
Identical scores both days of 73-73 (146) in the Boys 17-19 division resulted in a first place tie for Michael Blair, 17, of Burlington, and Brendan Leonard, 17, of Cambridge. “Mike was beating me by one for the longest time,” remarked Leonard, “but I made a couple of birdies and key putts to come back.” Coming down the stretch Leonard collected some birdies and shot good up-and-downs to tie Blair in this tight race. Just three strokes shy with an impressive one-under second round, Alex Wilson, 17, of Orangeville 78-71 (149) placed third in this division.
In the Boys 14-16 division, Kody Fry, 14, of Grand Valley, shot 74-72 (146) to win the title and tie for the qualifying spot to Scotland with Blair and Leonard based on low overall score for the tournament. Fry stated, “I made a lot of putts to save pars and birdies but my highlight was a hole-out for eagle on the 5th hole. Coming down 17 and 18 I was just trying to make par and not make any mistakes. It’s a good feeling to win this early in the season.” The three-way tie for the qualifier forces the eligible players to a playoff at a later date.
Matthew Speyer, 15, of Cambridge, was hot on the Fry’s trail in the 14-16 group with 74-76 (150). Third place went to Truman Tai, 15, of Markham, who ended the weekend with 73-78 (151).
